Hey Guys,

Ok this may be a really basic RAM question...

I am currently using G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 1100 (PC2 8800) and have some left over CORSAIR Dominator 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)...I've read that mixing RAM is possible but with some loss to performance. I've also read that it should be only done with pairs like what I have above. So if I added my old Corsair 2 x 1GB to my build do you think it would be a step up or down in performance even though its an extra 2GB's?

Or is this not even possible  .

Yes it's possible, I've mixed RAM before and it worked perfectly fine..If you mix it, it will (should) run at the slower speed of the 2, but you should manually set it that way..The clincher is the voltage, if the 2 take different voltages that could be an issue there with the lower voltage RAM running at the higher voltage of the other or vice versa..Bottom line = Definate maybe, try it and find out..You can check the performance using EVEREST Ultimate's Cache and Memory Benchmark.

I'll give a try this afternoon  . I'll check the voltage before I do.

I have one of those 3 fan RAM coolers that came with the Corsair Dominators, should I even bother to use that thing? Or is it overkill. I figure I can leave it on the 4 Gigs like I have right now.

As long as you have it, might as well use it.

I recommend not mixing any RAM.

Yes, IMHO...you will definately be degrading your performance...if you can get them to work together at all. Why would you purposefully want to do that??

If this was a Casino....I'd be willing to bet $$ that it won't work.

It might not work, but unlike a casino, he really has nothing to lose by trying.

As for performance gain or loss, if it does work properly, that will still depend on what he's doing with it.  If he needs more than 4GB of RAM for whatever he's using his PC for, then I'd expect a gain in performance.  If not, probably no gain.

If he REALLY needs more RAM...the smart thing to do would be to buy another EXACT matching pair of his G.Skill modules.

EDIT: If the Corsair's were also 1100MHz with the same timings and voltage...then, I'd say give it a shot and it would probably work OK.

Re:Mixing Different RAM Sunday, August 29, 2010 9:55 PM (permalink)
I just wanted to see if I could get an extra 2 gigs into my PC, my corsair is just laying around right now . My PC is pretty much just for gaming, but I didn't want to spend the money right now for more RAM. I had the extra ram from when I was using XP 32 bit but now I have 7 64 bit.

Maybe I'll save myself the trouble for now and just wait until I build a i7 + DD3 computer next year. Thanks for the advice though it's a good thing to know what things to look out for if you mix brands. If it was something like going from 2 gigs to 4 gigs with extra RAM I would probably try it, but I already have 4 gigs which is probably good enough for now.

I can sure understand that, Man...we (people in general) always seem to want more.

I bought 1 pair of RAM modules at the time I bought my board....knowing that I only needed 4 GB's. After only 1 month of use, It was driving me crazy seeing those two empty slots so, I made up all kinds of excuses why I needed to fill them. I had the money so, I bought another identical pair.

I always used to run a 32bit machine until I got win7. Now that I'm 64bit I want to use all the slots!

DDR2 got too expensive now that DDR3 is pretty much the standard. Spending another 100 + for 4 gigs of DDR2 doesn't make much sense right now. Especially when I'm just doing gaming, I'm not a video editor or graphics designer. I'd have to get a whole new motherboard and if I were to do that right now I may as well get a new i series processor. I figure I'll wait a year and build a new PC next fall and put a nice 6 core into that with lots of RAM. I'm just itching to tinker for now. Thanks again for the info, I'll find a use for those 2 gigs eventually...TV-Puter maybe?

From your experience what do you guys find to be the optimal amount of ram to maintain highest settings in games and keep up with the newest releases?

You are actually just fine with what you are already running. I just wonder why you are running that 1100MHz RAM at 800MHz??

Well actually I'm not sure if it is actually running at that MHz. My experience with changing clock speeds with CPU's and RAM are pretty limited. I will check it and see if that is actually what my RAM is running at. I made my PC contents list just from reading off the things Speccy showed up lol, my RAM could actually be set differently.

I will double check in bios.
