Look at Meade telescopes.  My Wife and I bought one for her Dad a couple of years ago for $399.  It has electronic star tracking and is way better than I thought it would be.  The Moon and Mars looks amazing through it.

This is the one we got him I think: http://www.shopatron.com/...3.0.1.1.28926.0.0.0.0?

Meade or Celestron. Both set the standard for telescope entheusiasts. They have some good entry level offerings. I've had a Celestron Celestar 8 for about 15 years now and it's held up like it's still new. Both Meade and Celestron are quality construction.

Looks decent enough and is a good price for a beginner telescope.

I'd suggest something more along the lines of the NexStar 4 or 5 or a C90. The problem with a Newtonian reflector telescope is that the lens is at the top of the barrel making it hard for younger people to use. I'd pick something with either a table tripod or a back mounted lens configuration.

Refractors, reflectors and Schmidt-Cassegrain all are suited for different types of viewing. A Schmidt-Cassegrain configuration of design is the type I'd recommend from experience. The tube length, the lens location and the focal length make the Schmidt-Cassegrain at least my preference for good general astronomy. I've owned all three types and the long tube telescopes always fell apart on me while the Schmidt-Cassegrain one I've had for 15 years and it's good as new and I prefer the ease of use it has.

On the Meade side of things I'd go with one like this:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/MEADE-ETX-90mm-TELESCOPE-MIDNIGHT-BLUE-/180541176111?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0
That's pretty much the Meade version of a Celestron C90.
    Or this:

The cool thing about Jupiter and Saturn is you can actually see the different moons in the orbit of the planet and make out details like bands in the planet and ring details. I always used to think it was cool that every time I viewed Jupiter, the moons were in different places and you could tell which moon is which by their brightness and current locations.

I've always been in to planetary viewing. I never got into nebula or star viewing much. The track of the planets and their constant changes always kept me interested. Also the moon is great to look at in detail. You begin to get used to where things are located on the moon after awhile with using a scope and even binoculars.

Ya, the stand can really kill your enjoyment of telescopes if it's a crappy stand. I really would suggest no less than a 90mm. That 70mm Meade ^^^^ while is in the right price range is really eating into the limits of the bottom end of light gathering size I'd tolerate even as a beginner. My suggestion would be to find a 90mm SCT by Meade or Celestron that can be setup on a table like this:

    http://www.shopatron.com/products/productdetail/ETX-90AT+Factory+Refurbished/part_number=3514-03-25RE/1323.0.1.1.57212.0.0.0.0?

Really, if you can find it on ebay used all the better. Celestron and Meade scopes aren't shotty quality and even used they're like new unless the previous owner abused the optics. I've seen C8's go for cheap that are 20-30 years old that work good as new on ebay. A C8 SCT is entry level entheusiast hardware though. You really should get a 90mm SCT as a starter. If you camp at all a 90mm table top model telescope could just be put into your camping gear set and not be out of place for the trip. It's very portable.

Here is what I mean by Meade and Celestron quality. Here's my SCT C8 that is 15 years old and good as new.

once you get your telescope you will want to think about when and where to look. cities have a lot of light polution, out in the country side is best for viewing, and if you want to see the plants and star clusters, best time is when there is no moon out. I would also suggest a planisphere , they are very handy to see what is visible during any time of year, happy star hunting!

I got a friend who custom builds mirrors/lenses for various use in film/photography. You can have one custom made for cheap there are instructions around the web. The most expensive part to get would be the lenses. You can find them cheap at photography stores or online. "Hong Kong" is the best place to get that type of stuff but shipping takes forever.

    http://www.funsci.com/fun3_en/tele/tele.htm

you can get the parts for next to nothing. If you want to build bigger you might end up spending a little more for the lenses used for the eyepiece.

If you want to buy. These are the best ones I know of. And perhaps you can get them alot cheaper on ebay.

First, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a quality but inexpensive telescope, you get what you pay for.  Meade and Celestron are both good brands having owned both.  Unless you want to teach your 5 year old an exercise in patience then get a computerized scope.  While many amateur astronomers think using a sky atlas is fun, it will take you considerable time to locate anything less than very bright objects, and even then without a motor drive the object will drift out of view making things very fustrating for your child.   Personally I favor the SCT scopes as they are the easiest to use for a novice.  The Celestron NexStarSE series 6" & 8" are good beginner SCT scopes with computerized alz mounts.

Interesting. I've always pondered having a custom ground anamophic projection lens made. Those type of home theater lenses are ungodly expensive though. Maybe they could be DIY made.

home theater lens are insanely expensive lol. but I know some people get around this by finding old projection tv's or projectors to get fresnel lenses out of and various other types of lenses. the fresnel lens in a projection tv is crazy cool. I saw a youtube vid of a guy burning various items with one huge panel and the sun.

Binoculars are another decent answer. Binoculars are often times easier to use because you're not oddly squinting through just a single eye with them. Combined with a solid tripod they're excellent for wide angle viewing and even a bit of planetary viewing. You can see Jupiter's moons from certain binocs if I recall. It's been awhile since I used some but the moon is great with binoculars. It's a bit of a different mindset to astonomy when using them though. There are plusses and minuses in their use.

Personally, if I had a choice I'd keep my eyes out for an ebay 90mm SCT. It's going to be at the upper range of your budget but if you win a 90mm for around $200 it should be a satisfying setup.
