I am trying to install the card in my computer and  every time I  boot , it is not recognized. Windows 7 Device Manager says it is a Standard Video Graphics Adapter, and loads drivers for that. I have uninstalled the drivers and card many times and tried it in the other PCI-E slot and get the same results. I have installed a GTS 250 in the same slots and have had no problems. I made sure that both 6 pin pci=e power are working  and connected. Any ideas on what may be going wrong.

Did you run the nVidia driver installer for the card?

Sometimes your bios won't correctly see the new hardware. Do a full BIOS reset after installing the 460 and see if that works.

Yes, but when the installer finished the message said that nothing had been changed and then it exited

Windows 7 will correctly identify a GTS 250 but not a GTX 460 since it comes with nvidia's 197.25 driver.  This is an older driver that predates the release of your GTX 460.

What version nvidia driver are you attempting to install?  Go to nvidia.com and download the driver for your appropriate OS version and the GTX460 (should be 258.96).

Are you trying to find a driver through the Windows popup for driver installation?  If so, cancel that and install the one you downloaded from nvidia.

I had the exact same issue as you on my e8400 rig.  I ended up installing the drivers off the disk and then went back and installed the latest from here and that took care of it. Try that.

    driversweeper is useless on 7/vista

the uninstall application is thorough enough. *it should not be defaulting to installing as a standard vga device though.

It works after a fashion but it still leaves junk behind. I think it has the potential to create more issues than it solves..

    * I think the OP is aware of that.

Ok, I removed the old drivers, reinstalled the 460, installed the new drivers from Nvidia website. It was still not being recognized. I went into Device Manager and this time it still showed as a standard video adapter but it finally let me choose a driver to update to. I reloaded the new drivers and now it is finally recognized! I still don't know where I went wrong but thanks to all for the assistance. The card is working great.
