I've been wondering whats the perfect clockspeed for an SB that will not bottleneck the GTX580, I know faster is better but surely its gonna hit a wall.. would 4.0Ghz be enough?

There is no such thing as a "perfect clock speed". All games have different requirements and will weigh on the CPU in varying amounts depending on the game and context. For instance in a RTS game like Supreme Commander where there are a lot of AI bots and tons of things going on in the game, your CPU speed will be paramount and the faster CPU you have the better the game will run. However in games like Metro 2033 that are so graphically intense and use piles and piles of advanced GPU techniques, a faster GPU will be of more value and give you better performance.

There is no static formula for a perfect balance between CPU and GPU. Your best option is the test your setup in the games you play and adjust your clock speeds accordingly.

If a game uses all four cores, I'm sure 3.4ghz is fine .... 2 cores , need a bit more juice. But it's all about your games dipping below 30fps threshold / or whatever frame rate it starts to stutter at, that's when you can just tweak your cpu to push it higher, once your frame rates stop climbing than overclock your gpu. Each game is different!

To my way of thinking, the best option is to find your highest 100% stable OC for both your CPU and GPU that you are comfortable running.   Then, within the limits of your system, CPU or GPU bound is irrelevant. Your system will perform the best it can in either case.
In my case, I run my CPU at 4.2 and the GPU's are flashed to 850. This is what I am comfortable with for dead solid 24/7 operation with good temps and a significant performance increase over stock.
