I am looking to upgrade my old 9900K. I have a 3090ti at 4K currently. I am skipping the GTX 4090, but will probably upgrade to the 4090ti or next highest end GPU that comes out after the 4090. I am looking at two choices, the Intel 13900K or the AMD 7950X. After looking at some reviews, I am leaning toward the AMD. What does everyone here think? The 13900K or the AMD 7950X? It looks like the reviews are pretty close so far.

Hi Chris! I was in the same boat as you as of yesterday. I picked up a 13900k & 4090. I came home and watched reviews before setting it up, and decided to take everything back & wait until next year for Meteor Lake. It was the power consumption, heat, & LGA 1700 being EOL that finalized my decision. I have a similar setup as you but with a 10900k. You have an awesome setup now. What is your main use? If it's for work absolutely upgrade now, but if it's for gaming can you wait until later this year for AMD's X3d cpu and see how that looks? The other is Intel's 14th gen which will be on a new chipset (LGA 1800).

Yeah power and heat are my concerns with both processors, but I am anticipating not being able to upgrade for a few years and will need to upgrade before the end of the year if I’m going to. Essentially, I have to upgrade now or I won’t be able to for a few more years and my 9900K is already getting a bit long in the tooth.

If you are just going to be gaming don't bother with a 9 series of either brand they aren't worth it just for games. Get the 7 series of either one. Both are honestly great and will serve you for years to come. If you're the type of person that only does a system overhaul once every few years it honestly doesn't matter which way you choose. The future upgradeability of AM5 will be lost on you if you don't plan on doing in socket upgrades and the current LGA1700 from Intel going EoL will not affect you either since by the time you do upgrade you'll just have to upgrade the entire platform anyway. Taking all that into consideration I'd honestly say go with an Intel i7 13700K. You get 8 more cores than what is currently offered on AMD's 7 series equivalent and you have the option of carrying forward your DDR4 if you don't wanna splash out for DDR5. Regardless of RAM though even with DDR5 in the equation I'd still say you get more bang for your buck on an Intel platform. Z690 boards can be had for much cheaper than AM5 and they all pretty much have feature parity in PCIe gen 5, numerous NVMe slots, plenty of IO....etc. As for temps, be warned they both run much hotter than you may be used to. My Ryzen 7 7700X pretty much stays at about 90-94C even with a NZXT Kraken X63 280mm AIO on it. The Intel i7 13700K I just got in, does run a few degrees cooler at 85-90C on a similar AIO but they are both hotter than anything the previous generations ran at. The Intel chip does seem to respond better to overclocking netting me a pretty easy 5.6Ghz P-Core clock while the Ryzen 7 7700X can only manage about 5.5Ghz. Though they both run an out of the box all core boost clock of 5+Ghz this generation.

I actually went with the 7950x. I think performance is very similar and just wanted to go with an AMD build this time around. I haven’t done an AMD build since about 2006. Intel was just better for me for all of those years.
I got this RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 5600MHz C36. Wanted 64GB, but couldn’t find a Corsair kit in stock. 32 should be enough.
Bought this motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero (WiFi 6E) Socket AM5
I’ll use my 3090ti for a while. I think this should be a good build. I’m not into custom water cooling and so I ordered a CORSAIR iCUE H170i ELITE LCD Display. I believe this AIO should work well this CPU?

What method of applying thermal paste did you use for your 7700X? I've heard these chips are best with a pea sized dot in the middle?

It really doesn’t matter what application you use as long as you get good coverage on the IHS. I usually manually spread it myself before mounting the cooler. Just been doing it that way so long. You can draw an X or a smiley face it really doesn’t matter. All that matters is you get coverage and good mounting pressure.

Decided that I would have some fun and upgrade both of my computers. One will have the 13900K and the other the 7950X. An AMD and an Intel build. Should be fun.
