I posted a previous thread more geared towards PSU requirements for the EVGA 3090 Ti FTW3 Ultra (24G-P5-4985-KR) and it ended up morphing into coil whine since I'm experiencing that with a brand new card from day one. In an effort to get more eyes/feedback on coil whine specifically I figured I'd try a new thread. But, if this is too much of a duplicate post please feel free to delete it. Setup EVGA 3090 Ti FTW3 Ultra EVGA supernova G3 1000W EVGA Z390 FTW 9900K NH-D15 2 M.2 drives Some SATA SSDs, case fans, keyboard/mouse, etc I’m getting some very noticeable coil whine in pretty much every game I’ve tried from my GPU. Even when capping the frame rate, it’s still there. But, the pitch does change. For example, even if I cap the warzone frames in menu to 30 FPS the coil whine is there and will change pitch as I increase the frame rate cap. Basically the same in game too. My previous card was an EVGA 3080 and had almost zero coil whine with the same setup listed above. In my limited research I've read that basically GPU coil whine is caused (or can be caused) by the PSU (and other components in the system). Basically I'm curious if anyone who has experience GPU coil has changed their PSUs with success in eliminating or reducing it? And, what PSU did you go with? What GPU did you have? I'm looking at an EVGA P2 1200W, P3 1200W, EVGA P+ 1300, or a Seasonic PX 1300 as my next PSU to try. But, am open to any ideas at this point. I could wait for a newer PSU with the 12VHPWR connector if anyone smarter than me thinks that would help reduce or get rid of the coil whine.

I feel like its just something you have to live with at this point sadly. My FE 2060 whined, and the two evga 3070s ive had have also whined. Changed my PSU last year since it was getting old and it made zero difference. Even my motherboard VRMs whine like crazy when my cpu boosts. Seems to be unavoidable these days with these high frequencies.

In my case I have the option to RMA the card, but I don’t want to do that unless it’s the absolute last resort. Since you mentioned you had multiple cards and your motherboard VRMs whined. Is there a chance you have some sort of “dirty power”? I’ve read older home’s electrical wire/systems can be a source of coil whine. For example someone has cool whine, moves to a new home and no longer has cool while. Could be an exaggerated story I read. But, I use to have a 980ti years and years ago. It ran a little hot and had some coil whine. Eventually sold to a buddy of mine (told him about the coil whine ahead of time), in his system he said it didn’t whine at all. So go figure I guess…

What country are you located in? If you are in North America try plugging your PC into another power outlet that is not on the same circuit as the one you use now. A surge suppressor with filtering might also help, but it's not guaranteed. If you feel it is definitely bad coil whine with the GPU contact EVGA tech support and see if they believe an RMA is needed.

Its possible, do live in an older home. Positioning of your PC and your case can also drastically change the perception of the noise, and some people also perceive higher frequencies differently. I had no idea my VRMs whined until i changed my case and moved my PC ontop of my desk.

I'm an old guy and have had several pc's, built 4 of them, with different brands of gpu's (mostly EVGA) and I have never heard coil whine. Currently have 2 - 3090 Ti's that I have installed separately, no sli. Could it be because I have always used a quality surge suppressor with filtering? If so that would be the number one recommendation for people suffering from it.

I do live in North America, I’ll try this later pray but I’ll have to daisy chain some extension cords to it. Unfortunately moving my computer (and having extension cords, is not a long term possibility for me). I’ll look around for a surge suppressor too, and try that. I’m concerned because with my 3080 (previous card) there was next to zero coil whine. And, now with everything else the same, I have coil whine with my 3090 ti. Leading me to think it’s the card and less so the interaction between all the parts (PSU, motherboard, outlet, etc).

Yes. I have been using this brand for years and highly recommend them. Warning, they're not cheap. I have the 4 outlet and the 6 outlet models. https://www.tripplite.com/isobar-4-outlet-surge-protector-6-ft-cord-3300-joules-diagnostic-leds~ISOBAR4ULTRA https://www.tripplite.com...stic-leds~ISOBAR6ULTRA Each double outlet bank is isolated from the other. But you can read about it on the website. I honestly have no idea if this is why I don't have the coil whine but RJ's comment made me wonder about it. Edit: you can usually get them cheaper on Amazon. I used to buy them at Micro Center but they stopped carrying them the last time I looked.

As I mentioned in the other thread (glad you started a new one), my 3090Ti FTW3 Ultra doesn't whine, it SCREAMS once it warms up above ~60C. It's powered by a new (maybe 20 hours in) EVGA Supernova 1300 P+ PSU. I'm connected to a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD sinewave UPS. Connecting directly to the wall makes no difference. I tried an RMA, but the refurb card I got was just as bad, if not worse. At this point, I'm resigned to dealing with it as-is since it supposedly doesn't hurt the performance or longevity of the card. I have heard reports of the whine/SCREAM possibly lessening over time with card use, but for now I and anyone within 20-30 feet of me at a LAN will just have to deal with it, I guess. The card is connected to the PSU with the PerFE 12-pin to 2-8-pin power cable. I guess I could try the 12-pin to 3-8-pin power cable...anyone of you with the whine try a different power cable?

Have you tried running MSI Kombustor for an hour or so? With previous models sometimes you'd get some lessening of coil whine by basically breaking in the GPU with a good thermal soak at full load for an hour or so. I had a tiny bit of whine with uncapped FPS on menus awhile back when the GPU was new. But since running benchmarks and setting up my fans for cooling using Furmark, it's gone. YMMV.

No one here has asked you for what monitor you are using. It matters to eliminate whine from a GPU. And NO it is not your GPU fans unless one has bad bearings. So what monitor do you have, and is it VSYNC, FREESYNC, or GSYNC, using either HDMI or DISPLAY PORT. A GSYNC monitor with GSYNC enabled will stop GPU coil whine. Since GSYNC matches your GPU to your monitor, most if not all current games will work just fine. And yes, one should always, have a PSU that running at no more than 80%, of its rated output for all of your components, in other words account for a PSU that gives you 20% free unused power, accounting for your CPU, and overclocking, on or at the bare line of recommended PSU for a GPU is only for the GPU. I have 3 cables coming from my PSU to the one cable going into the GPU, as BizSar wondered, should he try. The GPU needs all the power it can get. If you run any PSU right at or real close to the PSU wattage, stressing the PSU will cause excess heat or worse and coil whine from the PSU. VRM is another matter causing coil whine, too high of an overclock. Oddly, I looked through all kinds of Forums reference Coil Whine, no one mentions the monitor and its abilities as in specs. GSYNC etc. Always trying to blame the coil whine from something else, identifying the source of the coil whine is the first thing you should do. 3 things can cause it, PSU, GPU and the VRM. You can not fix an issue if you just are just guessing what it actually is.

Interesting, I’ve not read about this before. I have an ASUS PG279Q, the IPS version of the original ROG swift. Gsync, with an actual gsync module, 1440p 144hz. I don’t overclock the monitor because I’ve read it makes input lag worse. I always use DisplayPort, and I don’t believe gsync works over HDMI with my monitor but I could be wrong. Even with frame caps in the warzone/cod menu, I have coil wine. I don’t think it’s a frame rate issue, it’s more of a load issue. Whenever the card is loaded, there is coil whine from the card. I tried running the time spy and port royal stress tests. Takes about 20 minutes each run to maybe burn in the card or break in the card as some have suggested but the whine is still there. Not sure if either of those stress tests are enough to really break it in… Anyways, some more details on my setup. A few years ago I overclocked my 9900k to 4.9ghz all core with a 240 AIO. But, the fans and pump were fairly loud. So now, I’m back to stock clocks on an NH-D15 and much happier. I just tried using a different power strip with no luck but I don’t think it was a surge suppressor. I don’f have one of the tripplite surge suppressor that was linked earlier. I might try one of those next, then try the 12 PerFE cable that was mailed for free with the card. After that, I guess the next step is trying a new PSU (leading towards a seasonic platinum PX-1300). I like that it’s a littler shorter than other 1300 watt platinum PSUs I’ve looked at. But, am open to other suggestions. What about trying 12VHPWR to 4 x 8 pins (instead of the 3 x 8 pin adapter that came with the card)? Just thought of this, what about plugging in the cables into different PCIe power slots on the PSU? Instead of plugging them into the ones labeled 1, 2, and 3, what about trying different ones? My guess is, it won’t change anything

Funny you mentioned that last part because I’m using the 3 to 8 pin adapter and going to try the PerFE 2 to 8 pin cable. So, just the opposite. I’ll post my results with the different cables when I get a chance.

Not a lot of people know this but, as HeavyHemi suggested, over time of use there is actually a break in time for GPUs, (like other electronic components), its internal workings. I even had a TV do that years ago, made a buzzing noise that went away after use. A PSU can do the same thing. It is possible the more you use it the coil whine may lessen and go away completely. It has to do with the applied resins/parts they put on the GPU in the first place. Over time the components heat up, cool down, repeatedly, then somewhat set. It may be why your 2nd one is actually worse, it is new again, you were used to the coil whine of the 1st one you returned, after you used it for a while. I not sure about maxing your new GPU out though, as in "breaking in the GPU with a good thermal soak at full load for an hour or so", I would suggest normal high end use, overstressing it can damage it, lessen its life span. Yes, so called "dirty power" can affect any electronic device. But that does not seem to be your problem. Heavy-duty protections, including OVP (Over Voltage Protection), UVP (Under Voltage Protection), OCP (Over Current Protection), OPP (Over Power Protection), SCP (Short Circuit Protection), and OTP (Over Temperature Protection), my PSUs specs kind of make a UPS irrelevant under normal working electricity conditions, except for the backup power. But you only have a 1000 watt PSU, correct. How old is it your PSU? And you are getting coil whine noise but otherwise the GPU with your monitor is working OK? Frame wise, loss etc.? I will be back on here tomorrow, OK. I am in Indiana USA.

jdec112016w Not a lot of people know this but, as HeavyHemi suggested, over time of use there is actually a break in time for GPUs, (like other electronic components), its internal workings. I have an EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G3, 80 Plus Gold 1000W. Originally purchased in November of 2018. However, I RMAed it in January of this year due to the fan making a clicking sound, EVGA customer services was great, and sent me another PSU. Same model EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G3, 80 Plus Gold 1000W Same part number Part Number: 220-G3-1000-X1 Just different serial number, so my guess is it’s a new PSU. I’ve had it installed since January of this year. Frame rate and my monitor. I haven’t noticed anything other than performance improvements over my previous 3080. Everything seems to be working fine, other than the coil whine. My 3090 ti is even a little cooler temp wise than my 3080. My guess is due to the larger cooler. And, to be clear I had basically zero coil whine with my 3080 with all the same parts (PSU, motherboard, monitor, etc). I’ve had the 3090 ti installed for less than a week. Regarding the break in, any suggestions? Maybe I missed something earlier but I’ve tried time spy and port royal stress tests but those only take 20 minutes to so. My guess is I need something that heats up the card for hours?

The Kombustor stress test will have no problem loading your GPU up to the limits of the BIOS running the default stress test. Make sure you have all frame limiters for the program disabled in the Nvidia control panel. You should see over 150 FPS. I pull a bit over 450 watts with it, stock BIOS.

BizSAR As I mentioned in the other thread (glad you started a new one), my 3090Ti FTW3 Ultra doesn't whine, it SCREAMS once it warms up above ~60C.
I just tried the PerFE 12 pin to 2 - 8 pin cable and still have the same coil whine. I’m going to switch back to the 3 - 8 pin adapter and try burning/breaking it in with Kombustor next. After that I guess I’ll try a new PSU.

Give it 30 days or so, let the GPU break in. Even though I have the background and equipment to test anything. Anyone other than me miss the PSUs with ability and software for monitoring the PSU? Make things a lot easier. I used to have one years ago.

YMMV.
I tried the first option in kombuator for about an hour or so. The coil whine wasn’t too bad on the test. Tried one of the Vulkin options and had some high pitched coil whine but not as loud as game menus. Then loaded up warzone/cod and in menu with the frames called at 90 it still has the same coil whine as before (which is louder than the 2 kombustor stress tests I tried). I’ll try Furmark sometime tomorrow and post results.

For what it's worth. I ran all the different versions of furmark (MSI, doughnut, etc) and they don't seem to generate any coil whine. Seems odd to me, maybe they are a different type of workload? And, I'm not sure if that means anything specifically. All the other tests I ran in Kombustor generate different volumes and pitches of coil wine. The two Phong doughnut and PBR doughnut tests specifically have different pitches than any of the MSI 01 to 02 (PhysX4 GPU) tests. The burn-in mode test I ran for an hour but most of the others I was only able to run them for a few minutes or so. Anyways, I'll try burning it in some more and give it time before trying a new PSU unless anyone else has some other thoughts/opinions.

No worries at all, happy to post my experience/results for anyone to compare. I’m debating on waiting for Seasonic Vertex 1200w PSU with 12VHPWR (won’t be available until mid December, but I have no idea what stock will be like) or just picking up a Seasonic Prime TX-1300. With that said, whenever I do get a new PSU, if my coil whine goes away on it’s own, or if I end up RMAing the card. I’ll try to post an update here

Looks like I accidentally posted this in one of my other threads... Wanted to give an update on this for anyone that comes across an issue like this in the future. I tried a new PSU (seasonic px-1300 instead of EVGA G3 1000W) with no change in coil whine unfortunately (still loud/noticeable). Maybe a different PSU helps for some people/situations but it unfortunately didn’t for me. I originally tried RMAing the card but later found out EVGA was not able to get a new card for the RMA due to stock issues. So, I ended up returning the 3090 ti all together due to the coil whine and I must say EVGA’s customer service has been amazing for me. I really appreciate their understanding of my situation, helping me return the card, and making it an easy process for me. I know others on here agree, but I wish EVGA were still making GPUs moving forward.
On another note. One weird thing that happened after reinstalled my previous 3080, it is now make some very subtle coil whine that I’m sure was not there before. Tried two different power supplies and no noticeable difference in the coil whine from the 3080. It is definitely way more subtle than the 3090 ti was. And, I have no idea why this would coil whine now. Maybe my motherboard is a partial contributor it GPU coil whine?
