Hi guys,

Recently I got one of my HDD stopped working and I plan to change all my HDD into SSD. Before I plan to buy the new SSD, there is something that I want to ask. As I saw that EVGA Z270 FTW K Motherboard can supports 2x M.2 NVMe slots that will use sata port 0/1 and 4/5 (cmiiw). I plan to get the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2 TB SSD x2 for my Motherboard, will it be compatible for my motherboard? Plus I still have 1 working internal SSD Samsung 850 Evo which is used by my OS right now and 1 internal HDD. Once I got the NVMe SSD, i plan to move the sata port into 2 and 3 for my old SSD and HDD. Will it be fine? Please share your opinion. Thanks.

Best Regards,

I assume none of your existing drives are SATA Express and just plain SATA.

What you're planning seems fine as according to the manual:

    M.2 Lane Distribution
        M.2 Key-M (110mm, Top) – x4 (Shares with SATA Port 4/5)
o M.2 Enable/Disable is set within the BIOS
        M.2 Key-M (110mm, Bottom) – x4 (Shares with SATA Port 0/1)
o M.2 Enable/Disable is set within the BIOS

If you're installing two M.2 drives, then all that's left available is SATA 3/4.  Also, remember to enable the M.2 ports in the BIOS.

I couldn't tell you whether or not the 970 EVO is compatible (it should be), you're best searching to see if anyone else has installed/used that model on your motherboard model before.

Finally, are you running Windows 10/11 in UEFI mode?

Hi, Thanks for the answer. I'm running on windows 10 right now as I'm not planning to go to 11 due to I haven't updated my MB BIOS which requires some feature to be activated to use on win 11. I'm also not sure if it's UEFI mode or not. Is there any difference between the UEFI and non UEFI?

Still running platter drives you are most likely running Legacy mode and not UEFI. Win 11 will need you to to convert to UEFI for security as well as speed. I would eliminate all old drives and stick with SSD's whether external or M.2.
    I run an Intel M.2 2 TB and a Samsung 840 1 TB SSD.

You're probably better off with a fresh install of Windows in UEFI mode on one of the M.2 drives - you'll appreciate the speed increase more.  Note that M.2 NVMe drives are only bootable with UEFI enabled.

If you're going to continue booting Windows off your older SATA-SSD, I believe you'll be okay as Windows 10 should be able to see the M.2 drive(s) as a storage device(s).
