I have an old SR2 system (Lian LI V2120 case) that I use for software development, and I’m considering some upgrades. I’ve come across a lot of posts about booting off NVMe drives using the Duet hack, but I’m happy booting off an old OCZ SATA SSD I have. My question is: will PCI-based NVMe SSDs “just work” for normal storage drives? Or do I need to do something special?

Also, will an SR2 accommodate more than 48GB RAM?

Thanks!

May be this can help, there is a vendor on eBay who sell modified BIOS chip to allow old motherboard to boot from NVMe drive connected to PCIE, this the link ... Modded BIOS CHIP EVGA ASUS ASRock Gigabyte MSI motherboard, support PCIE NVMe SSD .... https://www.ebay.co.uk/it...65e:g:ENcAAMXQdGJRzlbC

X58 can't natively support it and no modded BIOS will work (simply put, need 2nd gen or newer).

The Samsung 950 Pro uses legacy driver support so that can work in X58 systems with a PCIe adapter.  I have one running right now.

It will 100% support 48GB of RAM.

There are other boot methods that you can do like using a bootable USB to pre-load the drivers for Windows and then have it re-load to the NVMe ... You can get any system to boot to NVMe this way but it's not hardware-level support.

Can you be more specific about the Samsung 950 Pro having “legacy driver support”? For example, how could I tell whether the same applied to the Samsung 970 Evo Plus? Is there another term to look for?

Also, to be clear, I don’t care about booting off NVMe. I am happy to boot off a SATA3 SSD and only am interested in NVMe as a secondary data I/O drive.

    Thanks!

There were some NVMe drives (the 950 Pro is the only one I know of) that have driver support built in to make them recognizeable as regular IDE devices in the BIOS of older mobo's so they can be used for boot purposes.

If you don't care about being able to boot from them then ANY NVMe drive will work just fine.  The NVMe drivers will just be loaded once in Windows.

I have an SR-2 operational with 96GB of RAM.
There are several threads around this forum that discuss success and failures with various choices of memory and CPU.
What I have learned is that you NEED a fast Xeon CPU to make 96GB work (X5690 or X5680).
The Memory that worked for me is: Samsung M393B1K70DH0-YH9

When it boots, it may retry several times before it will boot... doing the memory test. There seems to be a subtle timing issue there.

A dual Xeon X5690 SR-2 is still a very potent system some +10 years after the fact!

Please let us know what you find about the NVMe drives... I've been investigating the use of Glotrends 4-Bay M.2 NVME Adapter that supports Non-Bifurcation Motherboards with Soft RAID. It is a PCIE 3.0 x8 Bandwidth card. Its a bit pricey $299 but seems like a possible SR-2 solution.

    Good Luck!
