I’m on the verge of a full rebuild which makes me wonder about my current gear.
4790k Maximus Hero VII 2060 XC Ultra 16gigs Corsair Ram (DDR3) NH-D15 Chromax Corsair 750D chassis
It’s still a solid gaming machine but it is aging. The house could use a Plex machine, throw some emulators on it, proper browser for the big screen.
Is it worth it though? Heck of a rig to reduce to streaming machine. Better to sell and get something low power? Keep it around to tinker with?
What would you do?

IIRC, that machine will be way overkill for Plex Streaming. BUT, if it's just sitting around doing nothing, might as well put it to good use. You could fill it with HDDs and create a home server / media server if you're so inclined.

It will work for streaming as long as you only transcode up to 1080. If you do 4k transcode it won't handle even one stream.

4K is still really tricky; the encoder that's built into these parts/drivers are still really bad when compared to 1080 transcoding.
Your rig is more than good enough (as long as you have Plex Pass) and you're more likely to hit your bandwidth limit (if streaming outside your network) than you are to run out of juice on that hardware.

mizzer See this thread for more info on 4K streaming: https://forums.plex.tv/t/...ay-4k-videos/488165/14
Thanks for the link. I thought I'd get more a notification people had responded to this thread so apologies about the delay. I have no intention (at this time) to enable streaming outside my local network. I've had issues getting it through the VPN and gave up. Having it able to stream whatever i want around the house on the multitude of devices would still be super handy. Using VLC on my iPad Pro as a player I didn't have any issues but anytime I used my PS4, AppleTV, or the app built into the TV, the streams we're always lagging. Even when I used VLC on those devices. I'm 100% certain at least part of the issue is me not knowing how to properly configure things but it "just works" on my iPad.

I recently built a new Plex system that runs 4-6 streams at a time, perfectly fine: Intel i3 10100 H460 Mobo 8GB DDR4-2400 RAM The big thing is the iGPU version built into the CPU. Cores tend to not matter when it comes to transcoding. I would say hold up for the 11000 series dropping next month or so to see if there's a new iGPU version on them.

hehe thanks for chiming in but the new 11900k is going in my gaming rig.. I'm looking to see whether or not it's worth repurposing my 4790k into a Plex rig or sell it off to cover my expenses and possibly buy a low power dedicated plex rig (Pi or similar)

Right! Been really good to me for a long time. Kinda don't wanna let it go but with prices the way they are, might be worth it especially if someone will use it right now where building a Plex Server would just get added to my to-do list
