At least that's my experience. I had NFS Shift 2 on my system when I installed W10 and it worked. However, getting the game onto a separate disk screwed the game up so I deleted it. I couldn't find the original code to download it again so I bought it for ten dollars. Well, W10 doesn't seem to like the old Dx9 and it refused to install no matter what. So refund time. No issues with the refund but I'll miss that game. I can't seem to find another game like it that has as many races with different cars that is just pure racing and not some GTA type gimmick.

Somewhat related... The same goes for games like Portal on Steam on Mac. With the new OS only supporting 64 bit applications, it's up to the developer to port the game to 64 bit and they clearly don't care so now the game is unplayable starting with Big Sur.

Could you make a virtual machine with an older Windows version or even Linux and Wine to get it working?

hmm, haven't thought about this actually... it may work. The issue here could be the performance without a pass through video card to the VM. I'll have to give this a shot. I've heard that Linux + Wine for gaming is far from ideal. I haven't tried it myself but seems like a headache to deal with and probably worse in terms of performance with the added software overhead from Wine.

Not yet. VMWare and Parallels VM's are intel-based. They would have to completely re-write the VM to support a different CPU. Parallels has a semi-functioning beta product, but it requires the VM to run Windows for ARM. https://www.techspot.com/...etter-m1-mac-than.html Important to note the difference in performance between emulation (software-based CPU) and virtualization (hypervisor on CPU).

For older games, maybe a recent CPU is fast enough to just brute force running the game, especially if the game was originally intended for something like a Pentium 3.

I tried compatibility mode but Dx9 continued to fail the install. This is more a MS issue since Dx9 was on the computer initially and the game still worked. Removing Dx9 games removed the Dx9 and W10 refuses to allow Dx9 back on the OS. Yet I read on the internet that Dx12 is compatible all the way back to Dx9. MS own web site has the Dx9 runtime and doesn't mention anything about not installing it with Dx12 yet MS will not allow it to download. So, if you have old games on W10, think long about moving it around or deleting it from the drive.

Check also ..... I believe GOG.com makes their old games run properly in Windows 10 before releasing them. Upgrading classics for present-day Even if the game is older than you are, we test it thoroughly, fix all the bugs, and apply patches so it runs flawlessly on your next-gen PC and on modern OSs
..but I have little experience on it to be 100% sure... https://www.gog.com/forum...ames_run_on_windows_10

Bummer, they don't sell NFSpeed games. They do mention however which older games will work with W10 so that's a plus. Good find.

I own Shift 2 Unleashed I bought from Origin and have 62 hours invested plus have installed on my second drive that I moved using the Origin portal and runs and in addition have other DirectX 9 games and they work as well without any need of sorcery. This is a DRM game right? Of whom do you pick the game up from?

Did you have those games installed on you system before installing W10? Or did you manage to install those games on a W10 system that had NO prior dx9 games? I bought the game years ago using a DVD disc which I can no longer find. Not sure it would work now with W10 anyway. It is an EA game and was linked to Origin for the past several years until I tried moving it to a separate SSD.

No, this system came with OEM Win10 pre-installed manufactured around Sept. '16 and installed my games library from doing only fresh installations. If it's linked to Origin should be able to do fresh install from them?t I'm thinking something must be amiss with your DirectX stuff?

Looks like you are using W10 Home as well. Besides MS being stubborn, it looks like Origin is part of the problem as well. Too many people having this issue. It might have worked for you perhaps because you installed the game on the "c" drive? I don't see why installing on a separate Drive would cause this issue but who knows. Success!
After a two day search I found the original DVD disc of Shift2 Unleashed. Downloading from a disc was very slow compared to uploading these days and made me wonder if it was actually going to work, but it did work. I just need to contact EA to see if I can’t still download the DLC’s. It seems with the purchase of older games today that the files do not include the appropriate DX version. Every tech supporter I spoke to kept saying download the DX9c runtime not understanding that the latest version of W10 would not allow it or believing DX12 is compatible with 9c.

Nice to hear you got it working. Because of this thread I re-installed and started playing again so that I might at first test to see if I could find anything to help you out, but I ran into an unrelated issue in that I was getting very bad frames like on the order of 18-23 FPS than noticed my CPU was pinned at 100% with Origin being around 60% of it. As it turns out it was the Origin games overlay, turned it off now back to normal. It's funny I didn't have this issue before though?
