As much as how I would like to just buy a ton of SSDs and place them in a NAS, I cant because they are way too pricey for now. So, need help from you guys on deciding which large mechanical HDDs i should get (note i just had 2x 1TB seagate die in my server array).

I was thinking of the following:
1) Western Digital Black Caviar 1TB
2) Western Digital Green Caviar 2TB
3) Seagate Barracuda ES2.0 1TB
are there any other opinions and suggestions?

Importance:
1) decently long lasting
2) decent speed doesnt have to be amazing.
3) low idle and load temps

the most important factor to me is still data safety.
These drives will be placed in a server backup array.

Thanks in advance.

First off, the OP stated that performance doesn't really matter.  Secondly, the 2TB Caviar Black is hardly a drive that fits the OP's needs considering the cost per TB is $150.

Both the 1.5TB WD Green and 1.5TB Samsung Ecogreen are $110.  He could get 3 for the price that a 2TB Caviar Black would cost.  With three, he would have 4.5TB of space for his data.  Also, these drives aren't no low performers either.  If you read the reviews on them, they are not just considered slow storage drives.

If they are fast enough for me to put games on and watch uncompressed Blu-Ray movies from, they are GREAT!!!

Don't waste your money on that 2TB drive.

    mm let me clarify.
The most important factor for me is low heat and long lasting spindle and platter.
in other words, a drive that can last a good while.

    of course performance would matter.
cost is of no concern to me.

right now, I have my purchaser canvassing the black/green caviars, and the WD my passports.
From my personal experience.. the WD passports have been outstanding.
I have had 4 of them since their release and still pumping strong.

I will probably by a set of WD passports. but i need internal drives for the NAS as well.
The way i have my NAS set up is individual and raid arrays.
thank god only the individual drives died..
    but having the backup of a drive that died go dead as well on the same day sucked... --;

again i appreciate all the comments and suggestions very much
keep em coming. I will consider the prices once i get the quotations in.

I would stick with the wd black, they off a 5yr warranty (best price for a 5yr) are better built and faster.  I been debating on the greens but they seem to have a higher failure rate then the blacks.  Even though I just use mine for storage, I always opt for the extra 20 and get the blacks.  The wd 2tb black just came out so they are proabaly in short supply, unless space is an issue I would wait till they get near 250 to buy.

I don't think you can beat Samsung's Ecogreen high density 500gb platters.  If you want a drive that will last long, you want one with fewer heads and disks.  This is your drive.

Read this review.  It should help you with your decision.

Um, thanks luv.  I can read you know.  The OP stated:

    mikotan
    Importance:
    1) decently long lasting

I have lots of experience with the Blacks, both with myself and with customers.  Of the 12 drives I have personally installed....no failures or problems to report.  WD trusts these drives enough to give them a 5 year warranty.  So I think the 2TB Black does fit the OP's #1 item of importance.

    mikotan
    Importance:
    2) decent speed doesnt have to be amazing.

The 2TB Black does have decent speed so it also meets the OP's #2 requirement.  Just because it has amazing speed doesn't disqualify it.  The OP said it doesn't HAVE to have amazing speed......he didn't say it CAN'T HAVE amazing speed.

as for the cost of $150/GB, that's doesn't seem to matter since the OP didn't list cost as the 3 most important criteria.  So it seems that the 2TB Caviar Black does fit the OP's needs.

    mikotan
    Importance:
    3) low idle and load temps

They run cool.  In the last 12 hours of heavy use, the hottest that either of my 1TB Blacks have been is 32C.......with an ambient air temp of 22.5C.

Both the 1.5TB WD Green and 1.5TB Samsung Ecogreen are $110.  He could get 3 for the price that a 2TB Caviar Black would cost.  With three, he would have 4.5TB of space for his data.  Also, these drives aren't no low performers either.  If you read the reviews on them, they are not just considered slow storage drives.

i have the 1 TB Black Caviar,

It is quiet, runs cool and has great performance for a large single drive. I picked up mine for like $95 on sale. If you get two and one fails at some point you still have a TeraByte drive left.  Better then if a 2TB drive fails.  And you don't
have to partition to split the size with two drives you already cut it in half!!

I am running two WD Green 1TB drives in my file server.  Haven't had it up long enough to speak to longevity (maybe 6 months so far), but they are very quiet and cool and I wouldn't hesitate to buy more in the future.

Thanks for all the input everyone.

    I purchased -
    1x 1tb black caviar
    1x 1tb green caviar
    1x samsung ecogreen

I will see how things go with these 3 drives. hopefully they all last well.
As well as the old (pre-seagate) maxtor drives that has lasted me 10 years so far x.X!

    Hello Mikotan,

Glad to see you took everyone's advice on some of the finest drives in the industry. It will be interesting to see how they do for you.  I am suprised to see you have had good luck with the Maxtor drives. I actuall got away from them because the failure rate for me was about 50%.  The one's I replaced had several types of errors, like still working but acting up. Things like noises, start stops, or out right failure.  But then the others had been working for a long time also in what use to be my main computers. So I thought it was time to try some other manufactures and see what is working. I have a Hitichi Deskstar which I like it is quiet and seem to work fine and has for a while also some WD which seem ok also.  I use the older drives as backups for my backup.

    Good luck with them,
