Plan on using both M.2 slots, one for OS and the other for Gaming. read a lot of hoopla about one not being as fast as the other, but still faster than an ssd Yes? or does the x299 dark have enough pcie lanes it doesnt matter? Current build: Mobo - EVGA X299 Dark CPU - I9-9820X Skylake GPU - EVGA RTX 3060TI Storage - 2x samsung 980 Pro M.2 500gb Memory - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 4000 (4 x 8GB) PSU - EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 G+ Case - Lian Li 011 Dynamic XL Cooling - EVGA AIO 280 x 140mm CPU cooler

I have both M.2 slots on my X299 Dark populated with Samsung 970 Evo+, I have benchmarked them extensively (enough) and both have been performing exactly same if both are using CPU lanes. Notice that one of these (PM2) can be configured in BIOS to use CPU or PCH lanes so if it is not configured to use CPU lanes performance drop might be possible.

In general it shouldn't matter did you install it on 0 or 1 if they are identical, Windows will boot from that one and performance will be same. I'm -GUESSING- PM1 gets enumerated first and thus it will be 0 but if you want to be sure you know exact mapping of your drives you will need to conduct little bit of hands on research / experimenting to confirm which one is which one. Easiest way is (if you have your hands on two different drives) using DISKPART to get info which disk ended up 0. If they are identical I can't remember can DISKPART tell you serial numbers of each disk and if it can that might also depend on is your drive reporting them back.

Thanks for everything! Looking good time for some drivers and updates
