Sega announced at Sega Fes 2019 that it is launching the Genesis Mini this fall, and for real this time. Originally, Sega planned to launch the Mega Drive Mini (as it's called overseas) last year in Japan only, which would have basically been a port of the Genesis Flashback HD that AtGames built for the US market. However, Sega later delayed the release to improve the quality. Fast forward to now and the Mega Drive Mini is back on the roadmap, only now without the participation of AtGames. Sega has taken total charge of the retro reboot, and plans to launch the Mega Drive Mini globally, including in the US, where it presumably will be marketed as the Genesis Mini. That's how we'll refer to it from here on out.
 
he Genesis Mini will be available starting September 19, 2019. Pricing has not been set for the US, but in Japan, the single-controller package will cost 6,980 yen (~$60 in US currency) and the dual controller package will cost 8,980 yen (~$80).
 
As expected, the console will connect to TVs via HDMI. It will support 720p (HD) and 480p.

    Interesting that the Japanese version gets controllers with 3 extra buttons.

    I really want to see the full list of games. The Genisis had a lot of good games but I could see a list of games that highly focuses on one type of gamer with like 25% of the games being Sonic games. Still though the price seems very reasonable for 40 games as long as I get like ten games I care for I could buy the system. It's harder to justify when only like three games I care about.

    Not sure I understand the idea of these official retro emulators. If I want to go retro I can pay for the original console for probably the same price or less plus the games via ebay, flea markets or craigslist. Besides doing build mods on old consoles is an enthusiast sort of thing to do.
