is it m.2 or nvme since there is no bios setting to change it will auto detect unless you disabled the port manually

M.2 is the form-factor (type) of the device.
NVMe is the communication interface protocol for PCIe-attached storage devices (NVM = non-volatile media, e = PCI-express).
 
X299 DARK supports only NVMe M.2 devices. Any SATA device installed in M.2 port will not operate, as there is no physical SATA signals routed to NVMe M.2 ports on this board.
