Hi there everyone. I have 2 x58 systems that i built years and years ago, when they were new. I was wanting to upgrade a few things to get me by a few more years before i go all new again. It was several thousand $$$ when i built these systems, and they are running good, but i could get a new processor and ram for less than $200, and ive been contemplating it for a while now.
My big questions is: Can i swap my i7 920 for a Intel Xeon W3690 six core? Is that compatible with the E767 mobo?
I have a E767 with an i7 920 and 6gb triple channel (3 x2gb sticks)
and a E760 with an i7 920 and 12gb triple channel (6 x2gb sticks)
I am mainly using the E767 board with the i7 920, as it is the only one of the 2 that have sata 3 on board. I have a GTX 960 in there presently, that and 40tb (5 x 8tb drives) raid array for movies and what not. I have a EVO860 500gb for the main os drive.
I was thinking about upgrading my just the CPU and Ram. I was wanting to go with a 6 core x58, and like 24gb ram, hopefully just 3 x 8gb sticks. I've learned that running all 6 sticks is very hard on the system, and it becomes very sensitive without way higher voltage on the dimms and cpu. So i wanted to go with more ram and less sticks.
I'm not so worried about finding good ram, but the processor choices are little less plentiful then the ram choices. but I was thinking about swapping my i7 920 for a Intel Xeon W3690 six core. I'm not huge into overclocking anymore, i prefer stability, maybe a little OC, if the hardware plays nicely.
