I just Smoked a $300 RGB Corsair Commander pro setup with 6 fans! Tell me how could a company can switch the pinout of a power supply / cable yet it still plugs into either the G3 or GQ Powersupply! Yes I have both power supply's sitting here and had an extra sata cable from the G3 which is a nicer braided cable that I plugged into the GC and Poof SMOKE!

Why are you Blaming EVGA for your Mistake? The G3 & GQ Power Supply Cables Are Not Compatible. Compatibility of the 450-1300 G2/G3/GP/GM/P2/PQ/T2 (There is no GQ)

If their not compatible then they shouldn't plug into the same socket......simple. Just like everything else. Poor Engineering.

We do apologize about any issues related to mixing cables, but we are very clear about only using the cables for any given unit on that unit. This is in bold red text on a page near the front of the power supply manual. I can confirm that for the SATA/Perif ports the pin-out is different on the GQ and G3 and a failure like this is possible with using the incorrect cable.

Are 850 GQ and 850 G2 modular cables compatible?

There needs to be an IEEE standard created for modular pinouts and there cabling then, if one does not exist.

Yes exactly what I found after I Pinned out the cable with a DVM trying to figure out what happened. Either way piss poor Engineering. You don't design a modular power supply then design a new model and switch the pin-out polarity while allowing the older / newer cables to interchangeable. Also I'ts in the manual? Ok....... show of hands here of people that read their power supply manual before doing a build.......... I doubt anyone has.

Cmacclel, Just to put this to rest, EVGA doesn’t make the power supply themselves. They are made by a power supply company like super flower. If you look at http://www.orionpsudb.com/evga you will see that FSP makes the GQ and Superflower makes the G2 and G3. I killed 3 ssd’s because I had a G2 and a GQ and didn’t realize the sata cables were wired different. Took me a while to figure out why all of my spare drives had died all at once.

+10000000000000...... You never mix and match wires from different psu's, whether its the same manufacturer or brand etc.... You just don't do it. People used to do this ALOT years ago with Corsair psu's.

I'm in my mid-50s...been screwing with computers since 1975ish....(Ohio Scientific, anyone?)....but I know mixing parts from different things is generally frowned upon....at the very least you should have ascertained prior to trying this that the cables were compatible....this isn't on eVGA...at all. Sorry it happened tho. Sucks when something like this does...

Then when did you forget that reading manuals was a good idea? I assumed anyone who build pre-ATX systems would understand the importance of checking specs and not blindly trusting pinouts and keys to be compatible. I would also assume someone who has been around for so long would know that power supplies are almost all ODM/OEM manufactured by other companies.

Pre-ATX didn't have "modular" cable setups - possible exception for some of the very early PC Power and Cooling supplies. transdogmifier I'm in my mid-50s...been screwing with computers since 1975ish....(Ohio Scientific, anyone?)
C3 or something more mundane?

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding. I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.
