Hi, I'm looking for a budget gaming card for my son. He's running an i5-6400 with 8GB of RAM and onboard Intel video. He mostly plays Rocket League, CS:GO, and Fortnite, with some Overwatch and Minecraft mixed in. (Of course, CS:GO and MC run fine with the Intel video. :) ) I'm wondering what the performance difference would be between the $150 1050ti with 4GB and the $170 1060SC with 3GB. Does the faster 1060 make up for the extra GB of memory in the 1050ti? Or would the RAM make a bigger difference? (FWIW, we play Destiny 2 on the PS4, but the free code with the 1060 wouldn't hurt.) Or is this overkill, and a 1030 would be plenty of power for his needs?

What is the system either card would be going in? Is it a pre built or custom? What is the power supply in the system? What wattage is it and does it provide supplemental PCI power? What resolution and refresh rate is the monitor? If just 1080p 60Hz than 1050 Ti will do quite well.

It's a prebuilt Acer with a 300W power supply, but I ordered a 500BR a few days back when they were on sale. :) Right now he's actually using a TV set as a monitor, and I forget whether it's 720p or 1080p. But he'll probably upgrade the monitor at some point.

If it was my money wouldn't even look at the 1060 3GB but once. The 1060 6GB will give your son's Acer the VRAM for future proofing of AAA titles. Also, stay away from the non-SuperClock model because the heatsink is to small. I myself would like to own the 1060 6GB SuperClock but than would need to upgrade to this 400w FSP400-40AGPAA PSU that has a 6-pin supplemental PCI power connector. The Lenovo motherboard uses 10-pin ATX power connector so can't just get any power supply. But I really can't complain about 1050 Ti for it does it does very well for what it is and only a few games leave me to wish I had more CUDA cores like the DX12 version of Quantum Break.

The 1060 6GB looks great, but it's double the price. :) We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. We're more likely to buy AAA titles for the PS4, anyway. Do you recommend sticking with the Superclocked version of the 1050ti as well? Or is it less important than for the 1060?

And there's a reason for that much lower price of the 1060 3GB. Popularity of double the VRAM. No, the 1050 Ti spec non-SuperClock and the BIOS factory overclocked SuperClock have the same heatsinks. Only has to do with single fan 1060 3GB and 6GB models. It's basically the same heatsink that's on the single fan 1050s.

Generally, there's a significant performance jump from the 1050 Ti to the 1060. Memory can sometimes make up performance if the application needs more VRAM, but it wouldn't in this case. The performance difference between the 1050 Ti and 1060 (regardless of 3 or 6) would be too much. There's much less difference between the 3GB and 6GB GTX 1060 in terms of performance. The main difference will come when you hit higher than 3 or 4 GB of VRAM, as the application will need to juggle the memory load at that point. If you expect to stick with 1080p for a long time, 3GB should do you fine for a little longer. Example: http://hwbot.org/compare/videocards#2731,2770,2753-23,255,58,138,198
