preliminary testing tonight.   I performed an auto overclock in the bios and it set itself to 5.1ghz.   vcore 1.36    idle temp was 23C
 
I ran 40 minutes and passed an intel extreme tuning utility stress test. On water, the CPU was about 57C average.   That's all I can do tonight.   I will probably back down vcore and see how it does as I've read the auto OC gives it more juice than possibly needed.

Damn thats a descent chip. Wish mine wasnt poop. Then again i ran auto oc with 4600 speed ram so i have a feel that could have drove things a lil low.

ran some testing this afternoon.
5.1 ghz passed with no vdroop.   vcore 1.335   57c temp
5.2 ghz passed with no vdroop    vcore 1.345    65C temp
5.3 ghz failed with no vdroop all the way up to 1.4 vcore.   I stopped there.  
 
these were performed with the intel extreme tuning utility stress test for 30 minutes each.  Figured I'd see what I'd get before any sort of long term test. 
 
Not sure what a 9900K will do with vcore.   How high would you guys go?
 
this MB combo  will be my 24/7 computer so I'm not really trying to chase the highest overclock - to the extreme

Yes.  It's load line calibration.  Just wanted to know what the settings meant as far as percentages of VDROOP.    And it will be my 24/7 and 5ghz probably will be my setting.  Back it down a bit.  Thanks for your advice.   How you doing old friend?  Kids doing ok?  how old are they now (I'm assuming you had more than one)?   it's really good to see you hanging around here.  I saw another forum where they where binning 9900K ships and looking at serial numbers.  Remember those days when you did that? k that whole big list you kept on the Q6600, I believe

Doing pretty good these days, how about yourself? As for age lets just say I'm on the other side of 40 (yikes! :P) and yes I have 2 little reprints of the original both doing well both are in school (time does indeed fly). As for me binning CPUs these days lol yeah that would be a gigantic list and something I no longer have the time or will to keep up with. While I do still keep one foot in the door with overclocking and tinkering it's hardly my field of expertise anymore. I'm much more of a casual overclocker and just want a system that does what I want it to after I'm done setting it up. I'm done with the days of swapping hardware every few weeks, testing, retesting....ect.

going to use this post as my own little log and my findings.    Initially I used the robot overclock to see what my CPU would do.  It selected  1.36 volts vcore and gave me a stable 5.1 ghz after an hour of testing with intel extreme tuning tool.  That's everything on full auto. 
 
I then set the bios to no vdroop and lowered my vcore until the test failed.   @5.1 ghz the test failed at 1.335 set in the bios and was one hour stable when I went back in and changed it to 1.34 vcore in the bios.  This established my baseline vcore for 5.1 ghz.   was 1.34 set in the bios.
 
I then tested 1.34 vcore with vdroop set to auto (which I assume is what the robot does).    Vcore fell to 1.32 under load indicating auto allowed some vdroop under load.  Really, it varied between  1.32-1.329 under load (it fluctuates due to ripple I guess) on auto vdroop.   
 
I then took the value of 1.329 (highest range load vcore that maintain stability) and plugged that into the bios and set vdroop of -25%.    Booted in the OS and discovered in Eleet vcore idle was 1.34 and after placing a vdroop setting of -25% discovered under load, the vcore fluctuated 1.334 to 1.337 under load.  Definitely over my baseline vcore voltage 1.34 on auto settings.         I discovered that -25% vdroop added .005 vcore at idle than what I set in the bios.  1.329 that was set in the bios was subtracted from 1.334 and that gave  0.005 volts.   So when I put 1.329 in the bios, it added .005 to idle vcore and when  load test was applied, it varied between 1.34 - 1.337 under load.   So -25% kept idle vcore 1.34 consistent under load if not added another .003   Load ranged in a net 0.00 to 0.003 gain in vcore.   
 
Since I determined that -25% gave me 0.005 more at idle and ranged from 0.00 to 0.003 more at load, I decided to subtract 0.005 from 1.329 and put 1.324 in the bios.   Booted back into the OS and saw that idle was a steady 1.329 that was proved as my lowest stabile vcore.   I applied the intel test for another run and load vcore ranged from 1.329-1.334      
 
Conclusion.   -25% adds 0.005 volts to what you put in the bios at idle in the OS ....and  adds at most  0.003 volts under load and at least keeps idle vcore when applying load.    Hopefully this helps people realize that the vdroop settings affect idle and load vcore and what you put in the bios will be different when booted in to the OS and applying full load. 
 
this helps me to determine that at 5.1 ghz, no matter what I select at vdroop, I will need to maintain 1.329 volts under load.   I can go back in and plug in other vdroop settings, start a stress test and I bet as long as 1.329 is maintained, I can use any setting.  Of course I will have to adjust bios vcore up or down to make sure of that. 

5.1 ghz  -75% vdroop
Bios setting 1.324
Idle in OS  1.334-1.337
Load  1.352- 1.376
 
-75% vdroop added 0.01-0.013 volts over bios setting at idle
added  0.018 to 0.042 volts over 1.334 volts idle   (1.352 - 1.334 = 0.018 low range         and         1.337 - 1.334 = 0.042 high range)
 
-75% adds ~0.022 over -50% vdroop    (
-75% adds ~0.042 over -25% vdroop     (1.376 - 1.334 = 0.042)  high ranges between -25% vdroop and -75% vdroop
 
One other finding is that idle vcore creeps up just a bit in range with each consecutive minus in percentage.  no more than 0.008 from -25% to -75%
 

conclusion
-25% added 0.005 to vcore from what I put into the bios and added 0.003 to vcore under load.   Minor increase.  Probably to maintain idle vcore while allowing some voltage ripple effect.
-50% added 0.005 to 0.01 to vcore from what I put into the bios and added 0.020 to vcore under load.  Small increase
-75% added 0.01 to 0.013 to vcore from what I put into the bios and added 0.018 to 0.042 under load   Moderate increase 
 
Hope that helps understand how negative values in progression add to vcore under load.
