Intel on their latest Microcode Revision Guidance Guide has apparently stopped development of mitigations for some of its processor families that still haven't been updated to combat the threat of Spectre. After a comprehensive investigation of the microarchitectures and microcode capabilities for these products, Intel has determined to not release microcode updates for these products for one or more reasons. In my personal opinion Intel could be setting itself up for legal problems if any of the older CPUs are exploited.

With Intel still supporting some older Xeon chips on X58, will EVGA issue BIOS updates for X58 boards once Intel issues the fix?

If intel cut updates, there is probably a reason. If they found the threat to be nonexistent for some reason, there wouldn’t need to be an update. Did intel provide the reasoning for stopping the updates?

If intel provides updates, evga will probably provide updates.

The reasoning is pretty bogus, from an end user's perspective who actually uses a Bloomfield-based machine on a regular basis.

    See https://www.zdnet.com/article/intel-we-now-wont-ever-patch-spectre-variant-2-flaw-in-these-chips/

Intel says it stopped developing the Spectre variant 2 mitigations for at least one of three main reasons, including that it was impractical, the CPU was not widely supported, or that customers indicated the CPUs are running on closed systems.
"After a comprehensive investigation of the microarchitectures and microcode capabilities for these products, Intel has determined to not release microcode updates for these products for one or more reasons including, but not limited to the following:
    • Micro-architectural characteristics that preclude a practical implementation of features mitigating variant 2 CVE-2017-5715.
    • Limited commercially available system software support.
    • Based on customer inputs, most of these products are implemented as 'closed systems' and therefore are expected to have a lower likelihood of exposure to these vulnerabilities."

CPU families that won't be updated include Bloomfield, Clarksfield, Gulftown, Harpertown Xeon C0, Harpertown Xeon E0, Jasper Forest, Penryn/QC, SoFIA 3GR, Wolfdale C0 and M0, Wolfdale E0 and R0, Wolfdale Xeon X0, Wolfdale Xeon E0, Yorkfield, and Yorkfield Xeon.

I, however, do not hold eVGA accountable for this - this is strictly in the hands of Intel, and it is their fault, and I'm hoping someone soon starts a class action against them on behalf of users of any of this 'discontinued' / EoL CPUs they now refuse to support.

Sign me up for that class action lawsuit.  My BLOOMFIELD i7-950 rig could use a upgrade.   I actually have 2 950s.

i am kind of not shocked by Intel doing this. It seemed like a major headache to try to fix for older systems.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

I think everyone knew there would be a cutoff point to which cpu's got updated microcode, and even though there are still these cpu's out there they are well past EOL and warranty status. It is unfortunate for those of us that still have these systems but I completely understand thier point, my x58 board sees very little use anymore so I'm not to worried about this.
