It said I need to reboot, so I did. Reboot has been at a black screen for 15 minutes - sometimes its fans spin up for a bit. Should I hard reboot? I am afraid to do that if it is updating the bios... Just bought this. What the heck.

Re: Laptop bricked? Installed latest precision 1.0.9, then rebooted and bricked?

precision is not updating any Bios. Firmware is all PXOC(M) installs. Up plug the Power and Remove the Battery for 5 minutes then put the battery back in and power and then power up. What Laptop Model? Startup in Safe Mode and Uninstall PXOC(M)

Precision X and Precision X Mobile do not update the laptop's BIOS. It sounds like you probably have the now infamous automatic Windows update SC17 NVIDIA driver bug. https://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2776462Turn the laptop off and back on. Keep doing that until you finally see something on the screen properly. Once you boot up successfully, disable automatic windows driver updates for the video card ( https://www.laptopmag.com...ownloads-on-windows-10 ), restart the laptop, repeat the on/off thing again until it boots correctly, and then re-install the NVIDIA display driver EVGA provided in the C:\NVIDIA folder. When you re-install that original/older NVIDIA display driver, choose Advanced and then select the driver and physx only and select the "perform clean install" checkbox. Should work perfectly after that.

Does that only happen on the SC17 or all laptops running windows 10 and Nvidia GPU?

For sure it happens with the SC17 Gsync version. Other versions, I don't know. Out of the box, the laptop works great. But, as soon as you connect to wifi for a while and Windows starts automatically downloading and installing updates, after rebooting the laptop, you are surprised by it no longer appearing to function normally. The version 1.04 spectre/meltdown laptop BIOS update seems to have resolved the issue allowing newer NVIDIA drivers to function properly, but that BIOS version was pulled for some reason and now we are waiting for BIOS version 1.05. So, in the meantime, make sure the laptop uses the old NVIDIA driver which the laptop shipped with and make sure the NVIDIA driver doesn't get updated.

This was finally resolved with the 1.06 BIOS update that is now out. It is working well for me. I would highly recommend installing it.
