Hello all. New guy on the block :) So I'm thinking about buying a new GPU. I have a GTX 690 now. I built my PC a ways back ( 5 years ago or so). I have been seeing great things about this GTX1080Ti FTW3 GPU. My Question is would this card work on my older Asus P6X58D Premium MB? I noticed the new card says PCI ex 3.0. My MB has only PCI ex 2.0. I'm not really looking to upgrade my entire rig. It actually does really well with all games. I'm running a i7 975extreme @ a slight OC of 3.8. Any info will be greatly appreciated dcd58

Welcome to the forums dcd58! The 1080ti will surely work with your old hardware, the PCIx are backwards compatible. There is a thread in the stickies above for new members and info. We also have folding and crunching teams if that interests you, we would be glad to have you join us.

Thank you very much for your quick replies. I'm not allowed just yet to do a "PM" but I read your answer and very informative! But for now I know it will work with my MB So now i have a decision to make.

There is also a Marketplace to sell older hardware, it has a few requirements. Market is available after 50 posts. It is shown in the General forum stickies. :)

As above, no problem at all. PCIe is backward compatable. Just one thing, slightly amusing, if you do get the GPU in question, you will own a PC with one of the best GPUs available, but mobo and everything else 5 years or more old. I know it's costly, new mobo, new cpu, probably power supply, DDR4 memory - the list goes on. Just thought it's worth pointing out. (x58 is 1st gen core right? like i7 920, right up to the still expensive i7 990x. Not bad chips, but Sandybridge made them redundant pretty much. It stayed like that with tiny up grades, but it seem now with Coffee lake, gen 8 (thank AMD for prodding Intel!) we have or may have the second significant core series performance upgrade. Subjective matter though. Especially for those who bought skylake or Kaby just before Coffee lake became public. Coffee lake 6+6 i7 8700k + FTW3 1080ti, that's state of the art for regular dudes.

Thanks so much for the information. Since asking the original question, I have been seriously thinking total upgrade ( as mentioned by another member, the 1080ti ftw was overkill for CPU). Now you have given me food for thought. Again, thanks! It's better to do the full upgrade in one step. I had thought ahead when I bought the best at that time ( as far as I thought) but went extreme somewhat on the PSU (1100w). So at least I'm good there.😁 Money really is not a issue, so if I'm going to do this I would go big. I did before and even with these new chips, MB and GPU out today, my rig does quite well. One problem I see coming is this VR becoming popular and my rig is not compatible for that. So let's go for it. Upgrade! 👍 Any other recommendations I will greatly appreciate. 😁

The biggest changes I've noticed since the X58 chipset are the network speeds are faster, the M.2 NVME native to the MB, and obviously the faster cpus. There are lots of other additions since the X58, but those are the biggest differences for me-that and a fully developed GUI interface. No matter what you decide to build, I think you'll notice a pretty big difference once you're done with the build.

I'm sure I will. I see that the i7 8700k is pricey. I have found a couple of nice MB. Liking the Asus z370 MB. We'll see. Upgrading cost around 2g. Have a water cooler so good there. Hmm. Might not fit the new chip. Might as well figure in a new one, I guess. I'll keep everyone updated when I do this. Not rushing this. Big bucks involved. Decisions to be made. 👍

Check this newer case out! If your Gona go with a new build why not build it in a sexy case to show it all off! http://www.thermaltake.co...del.aspx?id=C_00002974Super heavy huge box though.. like 62lbs! Just picked this up tonight locally at microcenter. Seen it earlier at the store while grabbing a new pump for my son's rig and was with the wife so she didn't even give me a min to look at it!! Got home and checked it out online and reminds me of the crazy custom cases I build years ago with simular layout so it fit the bill perfectly.. dragged everyone back to the store and got the last black one! Comes in white as well.

Wow! That's some case👍😁 Not for me though. Lol. This is what mine looks like now inside. Drive bays are full, but still have room for growth. It's a full tower so it will work fine. Thanks though 👏👍 Also, I believe I made an error in an earlier post. I said I have a 1100 w psu, as you can see it's 1000. Oops 😂

Exactly. Although I use my rig for gaming, it's my home rig too. Need the hhds. The only water cooling I will need is for the chip. Looking at the Corsair H110i for that. Not really looking at at " true" water cooling system. But again, if I was, that's the case to work with👍

I'm in the planning stage of building a full new super powered tower desk top PC, probably in Jan or Feb next year. So I'd love the hear you guys if you upgrade any advice anything. There is a lot of info to know before taking the plunge. I will use my FTW3, and replace that in due course, but everything else, except monitor will be new. I am dead set on a coffee lake i7 8700k, and run it permanently at 5GHz. Should be possible from what I've read. Silicon lottery? Everything else is up in the air. Good mobo for OC, but no bells and whistles. Memory (should be easy) PSU again easy, but I haven't got much further than that and new coffe lake compat. mobos are in the works. Personally I have had consistently good results with Gigabyte, Ultra Durable mobos, so they will be first to check. I'll probably be pestering you guys for advice next year when compiling the components. I won't rush it. I want a sturdy, cool running, single GPU with coffee lake OCed system. No special requirments. I'll keep it and upgrade it slowly and want it to last 5 years, as my current very impressive system has done. But, recently I've noticed 4 threads (i5 3570k @ 4.75GHz) is long in the tooth. I tried the new 3DMark time spy ultra test (paid only) a few days ago. On the last section, cpu, it literally was rendering at approx 1 frame per second! All other benches are rather impressive, but clearly my rig doesn't have the power for future DX12 games. Time to save and be nice to the wife- help!!!
