I want to build a computer using a sli 1080 ti set as well as a m.2 as my boot drive with limited to no hit on prformance. I'm worried that a z motherboard id have to do 8x 8x to get the m.2 drive in there as well. but there is a price premium going with th x platform for sure.
so my question is with wanting to run 16x 16x 4x m.2 would I need a 40 lane cpu?
Thanks in Advance:

I think you are good with the X series. However, Intel is supposedly launching the X299 this month. Going to be the next gen X series. I would at least wait to see what the options are before jumping into X99.

In short-Yes. Z series chipset is limited to 28 lane cpus. If you want more x series chipset will offer you 40 lanes at premium price. Real life performance hit from 8x/8x to 16x/16x is negligible. Is it worth to you for 400-500 more.? Thats the question only you can answer. All best, Ghost

id love to run triple 1440p surround with a 21:9 1440 ultra wide accessory display in a 1 over 3 setup. thats why I was worried about cpu lanes

If you're going surround, high res and Hz, I'd go with the X line. That's also assuming you'll be doing more than just gaming.

Well wonder not much longer. By beginning of July you'll have clear picture what's on offer. Any kind of work will benefit greatly from X line over Z line. Amount of cache in HEDT CPUs is worth its price in gold. Take it from me X99 (5930) and Z97 (4790) which belong to the same family of chips (Haswell) - its a non contest when you do anything that can utilize raw power of cores. Certainly video editing is one of such tasks.

thanks. i figured the x series would be worth the wait. heard they plan to release a 12 core cpu beast. and also herd that there may be a 16 core amd chip coming too. so lots options out therer for sure. im also planing o running 3 LG 29UC88-B monitors in suround, over kill i know. i just wonder if nvidia could power them better then a amd freesync gpu.

Frankly I don't expect anything ground breaking from Intel - including ridiculous pricing. AMD looks interesting on paper, but it has to solve Zen teething problems before unleashing HEDT platform. I never was very fond of AMD ability of dealing with problems. I have extremely traumatic experience with GPUs and my last memory of AMD CPU is so ancient that I think dinosaurs were after that. LOL My biggest problem with 299/399 is not the price however, its W10 requirement. Something even more traumatic to deal with than all faulty AMD GPUs combined. On balance IF I decide to go with something new I'll probably stick with Intel offerings. BTW: I never understood folks stacking multiple monitors to do work (or in particular gaming). My head hurts with single 27". Holy Moly 3x29". That's guaranteed epilepsy after 5 seconds flat.

yeah its just something i have always wanted to do, it would be extremely wide for sure! id play my few games but its mainly for real-estate for streaming and media creation while researching. i have wondered if a single high end 34" would be a better investment like the rog swift.

Why not then go with for example 5K monitor for everything in one package. I can't find it right now. I've seen one day medical monitors with some truly glorious res. Of course price was humongous (at current currency exchange to USD it would be circa 4000$), but for serious work why not. Recently got PG279 and couldn't be happier (well illumination is iffy in one corner, but it doesn't show at all as I run my LCDs at literally 0 brightness), but if they release 4K in same frame at 144/IPS/G-S then no matter what I have to sell I'll get it. (still some unused body parts left ha ha ha)

if they make 4k more high refresh id consider one. id have to change the default dpi. i can bearly read text on my 15" at 1050p macbook pro display. im extreanmly near sighted glasses makes text smaller but with out them i cant even read my keyboard.

The best way to do this is to change the Windows scaling to make everything better and a bit bigger if needed.

Ah I can see the problem (no pun intended). But still getting multiple big displays will result in nothing more than accelerated catch-22 situation. At first it maybe more comfortable, but in the end eye strain will be a serious issue. Wearing glasses myself I can testify to that - although I'm not in such precarious situation that I can't read keyboard without them, but at some stage getting bigger and bigger is like I've said catch 22. For me 27" is maximum. I was trying to work with 40" and then 32". I didn't last a day. Basically my head felt like 3 seconds from implosion, but every person has different predisposition.

I use x3 24" 1080p @ 60hz TN panels in surround for a few years now. Haven't looked back and don't think I'll ever go back to a single monitor again. For multi-tasking purposes and gaming, it's amazing. While I only game on the center screen only, I use my left screen for monitoring of the rig, water cooling, etc. and my right screen I use it for websites, forums and typing this as we speak. If I were ever to get the funds to upgrade my screens which I would love to do, I would personally go with 27" 4K, 144hz, IPS, HDR, Gsync screens with thin bezels. I know its a tall order as they aren't out yet but surely they'll come at a hefty price. Screen prices I feel are at a very inflated price.

Yeah screen prices are a bit on the over-inflated side. Simple example 16:9 which dominates now the market cost is at most half of 16:10 and that only 140px more (2560x1440 vs 2560x1600). 16:10 is so expensive that it pretty much died out by now, but I would get it for sure if the price was reasonable. Even now my almost brand new PG279 with all bells and whistles is about, equivalent of, 500$ cheaper than cheapest 16:10 near me. Cheapest does not mean worth buying because specs are totally off except screen resolution. From all rumors flying around 4k/ips/g-s/hdr from Acer is coming at 2000$, ouch... I don't know if kidney is worth that much... Selling heart is rather (Mordin-)Problematic! Like you said GTX that you can't imagine going back to single monitor. Well on my side of things I'll never go to TN and less than 1440p. That's simply anatema to me at this moment in time. Using high quality IPS panels for good 10 years now just changes whole perspective how things should be done. Still 2000$ that will be like 2500 Euro in the EU with S&H&taxes.

yeah i herd of that up coming acer too. i decided i'm going to run a single 4k panel. it going to be a 60" of the tv barncles nerdgasm runs. so i know it will work. plus will dubble as a tv that way. not sure if 1080ti is best card yet but ill compare to vega when it releases. the gpu will be last part acquired besides the tv. till then ill use my 108p tv till i can upgrade tv. know not ideal but just temporary.

Yeah, price gouging is what corporations do. Take for example nutters which bought Titan XP then 1080Ti arrived and then Titan X(p). That's just beyond ! Excluding Arab Sheikhs, drug dealers, footballers and other people with more money than sense, IF it was me who bought first XP with next two cards following in short succession I would have some ' skulls on da pointy stik' by now! (to take a line from Ork Warlord Gorgutz)

Hey Alice. I left you some comments in your other post but I'll leave the same here.
If you want, grab the 1080 Ti for both of those things and either grab a X99 chipset or wait for the new X chipset in the coming months. The Z line can do these things but the X line is much suited for this kind of stuff.

Titan Whatever (don't you think its better name than X XP X(p) ) is card more targeted at deep learning, medical research and in general widely understood super-computing (I know Quadro etc too). Of course nVidia and board partners understand very well that it will sell too as a gaming card, which is nuts in the extreme, but there is no need to look very far for people with Titan Whatever SLI setup. 1080Ti will do 99.9% of what Titan Whatever will do for basically half the price. Its a no-brainer. If you were thinking about single Titan then get 2 Tis and look no further - especially for video work at super duper high resolution. And X series will always outclass Z series of chipsets for any kind of multi-threaded workload. By a lot. Of course required device for video work is NVMe drive or two (temp on one, work on another). This will eat any amount of simultaneous streams you can reasonably dish out at it, heck even multiple-live-8K can't choke this thing. And I mostly relating to (old??? by now) intel750. Samsung 950s or 960s are even better at this.
