My 2nd monitor is one of those cheap Korean 1440p DVI monitors if I'm going to run it off a DP adapter I need an active adapter.  Is there a way to force it to work temporarily at either a lower resolution or 30hz?  In the NVidia control panel I can't under multi monitors it shows it but I can't check it.  There has to be some way as it shows a screen in BIOS and goes away when windows loads.

Probably should have waited for an AIB with DVI ;)

Yes it was. I just replaced the monitor all the necessary active adapters (with USB) seem to be $100 now. The cheaper active ones without USB would not work for that monitor.
