I ordered it too late in the week, thought waiting would be the worst. Until I look at the tracking information and find it is sitting just a few miles away at the Fed-Ex sort facility. I cannot recall how long since my last build, but I am currently running an I7-960 @ 3.20Ghz with a G1 Sniper mobo and an EVGA GTX 680 SC.

I'm Most likely going with the I7-7700k. I really can't decide on the mobo tho, seems like I always have a more difficult time deciding on that, the CPU is fairly easy. If I could only take a few mobos and mix and match parts on them :) Currently looking at Z270 motherboards, but would really appreciate some recommendations. I don't think I am going to SLI, but I'm leaning towards a water cooled system this time around.

Regards,
Tom

Stop with the unboxing videos already, it is this generations "mullet hair cut".

That's the Z270 board I went with for my 7700k.  Not a huge fan of rainbow colored PCs so I went with a White S340 Elite with black internals and white LEDs.  Pics are in my sig link. This mobo is probably once of the best you'll find in the $150 range.  Lots of features and the BIOS is super easy to navigate.

I'm running a 5ghz OC on my 7700k with the click of 2 buttons.

Who are you talking to?  Are you trolling?  Where did anyone say they couldn't figure something out?

All of you guys talking about using auto oc settings and two clicks to 5ghz

I promise you your voltages are much higher than needed for stability and it's gone to hurt you in the long run.

Also google whea error correction and learn how to spot windows kernel errors to see if you're actually stable not just stress test stable. ....

Yeah... 2 clicks meaning the multiplyer and the voltage and inputting values for each. The auto OC bios setting I have only goes up to 4.8ghz.

I've done 4.9 and 5ghz with the highest voltage so far being 1.304v. I think I'm good and can probably go further than 5ghz I just have to get it dialed in. Everything I've read says liquid cooling is good up to 1.4v on the 7700k.

Not a huge concern either way. I'm already running much better than stock and am fine with where I'm at.

shoot 1.3v if stable in realbench or other heavy stress test is pretty impressive at 5ghz

Those numbers are actually being reported wrong by CAM... I pulled up Aida and HWInfo and both show 4900mhz and 1.255v...

dang 1.255v at 4.9ghz is even better will it pass things like intel burn test maxiumum at that voltage? if so thats a nice chip there.

I just ran it... not maximum but at the default standard... it cycled 10 times and I got the following message...

Success! Your system was able to maintain its stability while running IntelBurn Test.  This is usually an idication that your CPU is fully stable, if at least tested with the "standard" stress level.  If you are testing with memory size below standard, please re-test with "standard" or higher stress level.

Test completed successfully in 111.34 seconds.

Temps did peak at 94C though... but isn't that pretty normal?  It hasn't gotten that high since the delid.  Should I feel good about this chip?

hmm 94c seems a little toasty . But dang it seems like you are stable.are you using a manual vcore? Or offset ? if you are on offset your voltages may be going really high causing that 94c as avx is quite hard on intel. Avx is overkill for most though if you voltages are staying low for normal usage then there's no problem

94C? Ouch... Personally for longevity, I don't like exceeding 85C.

Let me add the caveat here that, I don't use an AVX offset in the BIOS witch reduces the core boost by the offset amount, default is 3 or -300mhz. And yes indeed in both P95v28 and IBT, AVX does really heat up the processor.

I ran it on Standard setting and it did 10 passes for about 7 seconds each and gave me that message.

It's a manual vcore... the offset is set to AUTO so I'm not sure what the value is at.

I just set the IBT to maximum and it ran for about a minute and peaked at 98C and I stopped it at that point.  I don't care to damage anything trying to push maximum limits with my CPU.  It didn't crash in any of these tests but it did get into the 90's...

... which it doesn't do for normal usage.  I've encoded videos for 3 hours straight at 100% load and peaked in the low 70's... so whatever this burn test is doing I gotta ask, will I ever encounter this in a real world situation?

I don't either... and I haven't went over like 82C since the delid... pretty much everything is in the 60's and 70's.  This burn test pushed me well over 90... AVX?

weird at 1.255v fixed you shouldn't see those kind of temps . But you will 99.99% never encounter the avx code in real life .

Yes, I added some info to my prior post. I'm not familiar enough with your specific processor to know what temps to expect under varying conditions. If people are using earlier versions of Prime or using an offset for AVX the BIOS it skews the results. AVX in P95v28 and IBTputs a massive unrealistic load. But I guess it does serve as worst case for your thermal solution (cooling)

That was actually a typo on my part... it was not 1.255 but 1.225.  Either way, it definitely got warm.  I just ran the maximum test again and peaked at the same 98C after about 1 min... voltage did stay at 1.225 the entire time.

Thanks for info.  No offset here and I don't want results skewed and I don't think they were.. LOL... man, that thing gets hot running the AVX... peaked at 98C after a minute and that was enough for me.

I'm all for getting added performance from my PC (and 4.9 or 5ghz is definitely better than 4.2) but I'm not interested in pushing it to the point of damage.  I'm gonna leave it alone now!

ya i usually don't play to much with prime or intel burn test. i like rog real bench set with max amount of ram as handbrake encoding is pretty intensive and if it is able to pass that then its ok for the rest of the stuff. its just strange you are seeing such high temps from 1.225v! which is awsome for a 4.9ghz oc. i have mine at 1.27v or 1.265v according to cpu z for 4.9ghz. i can hit 5ghz with more vcore but saw 0 gain in any game so lower fan speeds and 4.9 is fine for me. I am very jelly of your hybrid 1080ti though :X

ya i usually don't play to much with prime or intel burn test. i like rog real bench set with max amount of ram as handbrake encoding is pretty intensive and if it is able to pass that then its ok for the rest of the stuff. its just strange you are seeing such high temps from 1.225v! which is awsome for a 4.9ghz oc. i have mine at 1.27v or 1.265v according to cpu z for 4.9ghz. i can hit 5ghz with more vcore but saw 0 gain in any game so lower fan speeds and 4.9 is fine for me. I am very jelly of your hybrid 1080ti though :X

Yeah I'm beginning to not like prime and IBT either LOL...I have never used that realbench so I will check that out just for kicks...

As for Handbrake... yeah, I recently encoded my entire library of over 100 BR movies to digital copy and it passed with flying colors.  I've ran it for 3 hours straight and I've set it up to run all night for 6 and 7 hours straight and never had a problem with stability running for hours on end at 100% load.

I'm not sure of the reasoning behind the high temps other than AVX because that's the only time I've seen 90+ since the delid.  The temps have been steady in the  60s and 70s under load.  Anyway, the 1.225v is pretty sweet and I've had no stability issues at 4.9 so I think I'm just gonna keep it at this speed too.  5ghz has crashed games a couple times so I'm feeling better about 4.9.

The hybrid is nice man... can't deny it.  I played GTA5 for a couple hours earlier and was vsync locked at 60fps on 4k ultra... CPU temps peaked in the low 60's and Ti peaked at 49C... well below the 84C I saw with the stock blower.

    Can't complain...

my temps on my 7700k under and huge phantek cooler with one fan in the middle are pretty similar to yours with a lovely ambient of 80f :X.IBT does demand more vcore for me though to pass 10 runs compared other stress tests. Could just be something weird with his IBT download or something as it's the only thing running supper hot. It's pretty amazing he passes at 1.225v for ibt as ibt high takes 1.295 v for me to pass 10 runs of high

Here's 10 runs of high just now...

As you can see... it was 1.225 and  a peak of 1.255?  I passed 10 runs with mid to upper 90's.

Since the delid I haven't seen temps this high on anything other than stress tests... I just ran Prime95 blend for 8 minutes.  It ran in the mid 70's for the first 6 minutes then the low 90's for the last 2 minutes.

Didn't crash either time.  I really have seen all I need to see.  I think I'm good to go at 4.9ghz.

if you run CPU z or hwmonitor or if there's a field that says vcore as vid can be off. As I feel like somehow your voltage must be climbing up. But since it only happens in ibt you can probably ignore it for normal use

Maybe I should go back and check my bios settings... I wonder if there is a "fixed" setting or something to where the vcore doesn't go up?  I'm pretty new at this but I'm not stupid... just learning it is all.

You lost me with the vcore vid being off...

vid is just a voltage ID mine stays at voltage like yours but I have 1.295v keyed in download CPU z and watch core voltage on it. And there should be a fixed voltage but offset is fine . If you do an offset just stay away from avx. my gusse is avx is just making your voltage spike up realy high with how ever your vcore is set up in the bios http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html.

Cool thanks for info.  I've already got CPU-Z was just using HWinfo for those tests.  For kicks I just ran the same high IBT test on default 4.2ghz and passed all 10 with a peak of 79C.

The OC is definitely causing things to heat up... but like I said, it's only happening on these stress tests. Gonna look more into this and see if I can find out what's going on.

ya its most likely your voltage is some kind of offset as avx to some is know as a power virus as it will cause offset voltages to be a lot harder to control. but ya i think you have come to the right conclusion of no need to play around or run a fixed voltage unless you want to since it has done everything just fine
