Hello all.

I got two GTX 970's to upgrade my alienware aurora R4 from the single 680 that it came with.  I just recently had the motherboard replaced under warranty, and now if I try to install both cards, I get no video at all.  Both cards work alone in either slot, but if I install both I get nothing.  Alienware customer service said I need to upgrade my 875W power supply to run it, but everything I've read, including this sites power supply tool, is telling me that 875W is plenty of power to run the two cards.  And to top it off, both cards worked fine on the old motherboard...until it broke.  So, before I go through the expense and headache of installing a larger power supply, am I wrong in thinking that 875W is enough for these cards?  I'm I perhaps missing something?

Thanks

    Welcome to the Forum Faethore
Have you update the R4 Bios to A11?   Download
875W power supply is fine I tested 2 GTX 780 Cards at one time in mine, I have a GTX 690 in my R4 ATM.
I recommend the 04G-P4-1970-KR Blower Style Cooler for the R4. ACX Coolers in the R4 overheat the hole system with the Side Cover installed.
http://www.evga.com/Products/Specs/GPU.aspx?pn=0560c2db-51a4-4f52-85ea-29777752e5a6 Shows 500 Watt or greater power supply.****
****Minimum system power requirement based on a PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2GHz processor.

Yes, the bios was the first thing I checked.  Alas, I already bought two ACX cooler cards from EVGA B stock a couple months ago.  I didn't realize the blower style was better until recently.  EVGA probably isn't going to let me trade them in hehe.

I think I'll call alienware CS back and insist they fix it or send another motherboard.  Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm wondering if the board is getting enough from the 12v rail? How many dedicated 4 pin for 12 volts does it have and are they all being supplied? Does the bios give you a choice to divert from the 20 pin to the 4 pin? Are you running dedicated power supply lines to the cards or using splitters?

The Video cards both have their own dedicated (2x) six pin connectors.  As far as 4 pin connectors, none that I'm aware of.  The only things hooked up besides the two video cards are one HHD and one Optical (dvd) drive, neither of which are using 4 pin connectors.  I was running some tests on the two cards, and one of the cards seems to have an issue.  The computer intermitantly fails to detect it when it's installed by itself on start up.  So I'm beginning to think one of my cards is bad.

Test each card by itself in the computer.

Curious about your MB aux ports, which board is it?

As far as I know the R4 only came with an X79 Motherboard by Alienware, it has a daughter board as well.

Took a closer look at the board layout and you are correct, there is no 12 Aux input. Any extra  voltage needed for the PCIe buss will come from the 20 pin.
