I have an Evga Gtx 980 FTW 4gb card (Displayport 1.2) and an Asus VG278HE (HDMI 1.4) monitor.
Currently I am using a DVI-D 'dual' cable to connect them together. No problems whatsoever.

My question is should I use a Display Port to HDMI cable?
If so, then why?

Also would I still be able to run the monitor at 144 hz?

Thanks in advance.

I think you should stick to the DVI-D cable unless you need the HDMI cable for audio. HDMI has limitations on what refresh rate it can run (I believe you can only go up to 120hz).

In the future when it becomes time to replace your monitor go with a DP based model.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

Yep, DVI is MUCH better for gaming, HDMI and DP are better for watching movies and such.
My DP 'works' at 144hz, but it is glitchy.
My other monitor (and totally seperate computer), DVI, has never had 1 single issue.
But, DP seems to be better than HDMI, although they share some of the same problems.
