Thinking of getting a second 1080, how safe is one slot spacing?

I have an Asus Z97-A motherboard of which I have attached a picture.  Of the 2 free PCIe slots only one seems plausible since apparently EVGA doesn't make a SLI bridge that would work with my configuration since the bottom slot looks more like a 3 slot and not a 4 slot scenario.  Also, I am not entirely sure if that last slot can even be used for SLI, the manual is less than clear on that.
The case is a Corsair 750 D full tower Airflow edition.  I will be replacing both front 140s along with the rear 140 and the 2 120s of the Corsair H100i v2 with Corsair ML120s and ML140s.  They're pretty new and I just wanted to try them out, pricey though!  Will the one space configuration along with the case layout and new fans be enough to keep the top card from running too hot?  My friend has 2 1070 Zotac Amped Extreme Editions (3 slot cards) right next to each other (again, only config that would fit) and the temp difference between the top and bottom card is between 18 and 20C!!

Currently my 1080 GTX FTW hovers in the low 70s after prolonged gaming.

Is this a good idea?   After seeing what the 2 1070s can do, I am hooked, especially since the games I play the most, Witcher 3, Rise of the Tomb Raider etc... support SLI quite well.

Why is it so hard to find 1 slot SLI Bridges?  Are they in high demand or does no one want them and thus not many are being manufactured?

Thanks in advance for any input.

That spacing looks fine to me. Your case looks clean, but how is the airflow?

You should be fine, I Fold 24/7 with my FTW as the top card and a GTX 1070 below it Folding also.

You will clear, temp difference will be there still. 10-20° difference with open air cooler, was my experience with ACX 2.0 and my buddy's experience with the 1070. Went blower for 1080s for this reason.

10C I could deal with based on how the single card performs, just have to jack up the fan speeds since I am still using the default fan curve from Precision X.

Too bad that both a second 1080 and the 1 slot bridge are only beat in their rarity by a pink Unicorn.

Oh, and what's the consensus on using 2 cards at x8/x8 since this board has a Z97 chipset?

    Thanks for all the replies!

There have been tests done and in most games you will only see a couple fps more in 16x16. 8x8 is fine for 2 way in gaming.

Once the Hybrid cooler comes out for the FTW PCB you'll be all set.

That is what I ultimately did with my FEs and the temp in my room dropped by about 3-5° lol.

It's only improving the efficiency it's pulled from the GPU. You're still constrained by the ambient temperature of the room and the wattage given off by the GPU as a constraint.

I am seeing right around 20C difference between 2 Zotac Amp Extreme (3 slot cards) in a Skylake system.  Using the 1 slot bridge, there is almost no space between the 2 3 slot cards.  This has me a bit worried seeing how much cooler 1070s tend to run compared to 1080s.  Hopefully having about an inch of space between the cards will help the temperatures a bit.  I wish I had a X99 board to keep them further apart.

True, but the ambient rises in a room with poor air flow the more heat you pump into it. If the Delta above ambient is higher so is the heat coming out. I am here to tell you my system now trickles lower heat vs blasting the higher delta aforementioned, hence the ambient under load drop.
