I suggest that you download and run the bootable hard drive diagnostic tests from Seagate's web site.  If it is a USB external hard drive, you could try a different USB port.  Based on what you are stating as far as the "grinding noise", I would suspect that it is in it's death throes.  Try to get it running enough to move the data from it.

Also a possibility that shouldn't be ignored is that the external closure is dead or dying and the drive itself is fine.  I'd remove the drive and either connect it internally to the pc or try it in another external closure.

its powered from the mains socket so would you still say that the encloser is dying maybe and not the drive?

All I can say is it's a possibility.  Grinding noises are never good news when talking about hard drives, but it's an easy thing to check and an easy thing to fix, if it is the enclosure.

Is the external drive a pre-built self contained one, like the WD My Book is http://www.wdc.com/en/pro...oducts.asp?DriveID=781 , or is it an external enclosure that you inserted a hard drive into, as an example http://www.newegg.com/Pro..._-17-816-007-_-Product ?
What do you mean it is "powered by the main socket"?  Does the drive have a separate power brick or cord that you plug into an electrical outlet and then it connects to the PC via USB cable?

If you remove the drive from the enclosure, be very careful when disconnecting any wires.  Since those types of external drives are not meant to be disassembled by the end user, the wire soldering is not that strong.  Additionally, the drive may not be connected to the enclosure via the standard SATA interface, and the standard power port that you would find on a traditional SATA hard drive.  I would first attempt to run the diagnostic program prior to disassembling the enclosure.  Is the drive still under warranty?

Does the drive power up at all?  Have you tried plugging it into a different USB port?

As far as it showing up in My Computer, that is through the USB port.  If the enclosure LED is not coming on, and the wire leading to the LED inside the enclosure is connected, then either there is a problem with the drive itself, or the enclosure.  I would take it apart to the point that I could see where the SATA and power connection are on the actual drive, and if they are the standard connections, then I would remove the drive completely and install it internally in my PC, or in another enclosure.

Make sure you have tried a USB port on the motherboard yourself. If you have important documents it is good to have the data one on drive and then backed to another drive.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

If the drive does not have the standard connections (it probably will), and you cannot determine if it is the drive or the enclosure, I would see if there are adapters that will convert the drive connections to the standard ones.  Should there be no "at home" solutions, I would call the manufacturer, state what has happened, and inquire about a way for them to copy your data to CD's and ship them to you along with the replacement drive.  I really feel that the connections will be the standard ones, and you will be able to mount the drive either internally, or in a different enclosure to determine the state of the hard drive itself.
