I built a new system a week or so ago with an i7 6700k. I temporarily put on the standard Intel 115x fan assembly (it was freebie). It did surprisingly well, but my temps with about  hi CPU loads were higher than I'd like and teetered on redline.

I got the Intel BXTS15A cooler (for cheap). But it is a much taller unit with a 0.600A higher speed fan. It worked surprisingly well. With a little fan tuning, I could OC 7% and run a CPU burner and easily keep the CPU under 65 degrees and dead silent under normal computing loads. But it is cool this time of year and my old Cosmos 1000 case has plenty of ventilation, so an air cooling solution is pretty easy for me. You might want liquid for hard core overclocking of course. But this cooler is a viable option for skylake.

Those temps are a little too high IMO.. I could OC my i7 4790K to 4.7GHz and maintain 50C under load on a H90.

There are affordable and silent small Noctua coolers very high quality available.
People hate Intel coolers... For me installation of him is harder than AIO, I hate that moments.
Noctua now produce 92mm slim fans very thin and useful for coolers as NH-U9S, no problem with memory slots and they are good enough to cooldown CPU overclocked to 4.5-4.6GHz without noise. They are not for highest overclock but for people who don't increase voltage to much, maybe around 100mV... they could OC as much CPU allow with them.
When someone ask me for some smaller air cooler I always recommend NH-U9S or NH-D9L and all people are satisfied.
They usually close side panel and don't care for color, only for silence and performance.
