Motherboard: EVGA z87 FTW
Processor: Intel 4770k 3.9ghz

I've had this bad boy for a long time and everyone keeps telling me with this combo, I can overclock to 4.6ghz.  I've never tinkered with OC'ing and I would very much like to OC it.  Help me out if I'm wrong.
I read about a few stuff.  I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, ran a benchmark and got 809.  When I analyzed it, it showed someone had the same board and cpu as I did with a 87% compatibility.  So I downloaded the profile and loaded it.  My CPU was showing a clock of 4.4ghz.  When I restart my computer, the OC is gone.  I haven't played with E-leet because I don't want to mess anything up.  Computer keeps locking up when I set cores to 44.  Under Extreme tuning, everything runs fine.

Here's the kicker.  When my computer is running at 4.4ghz, Heaven Benchamark shows 3.8ghz.  What's going on here?  If I tweak my system through E-leet, what do I change first so it doesn't lock?  I'm trying to reach 4.6ghz.  44x100=4.4ghz.  I did that.  I set CPU Override to 1.2.  Showed the cpu was barely over 3.8.  When I changed the BCLK from 100 to 110 it locked.

Be careful OC'ing you can easily fry your cpu. I had a friend do this once they seen a faster overclock so he used the guys overclock with out taking in to consideration of what the other system was using for cooling. Needless to say he fried his CPU. Small increments is the key. You can raise the clock up once it fails back it down a notch or two. Then you have to start adding more power to the CPU again in small increments. I am no expert by any means. But I have never lost a cpu to overclocking. My current system is only better then 75% of other system with similar setups according to Futuremark

First off, the software you are using, while good software is something that applies a setting to windows once you are in, so if you reboot, it clears.
It is advised to do you main overclocking from within the BIOS.  This will be as simple as adjusting the multiplier.  However, you will want to test thoroughly after each step up you do.  You will likely need to increase VCore.  Also what speed is your memory set to, that can have a distinct effect on an overclock as well.  This is something you want to take your time with until you are familiar with the ins and outs of overclocking.  Also, make sure your motherboard BIOS is current, and if you are testing please provide full specs on voltage and other BIOS settings you are using and if there is a BSOD, the BSOD code as well and what version of windows you are running.

You should really read some oc guides, http://www.overclock.net/...-overclocking-oc-guide
