Hi, all.  Just curious about something.

I'm on the Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast Ring, and the newest Redstone build 14291 has come in and replaced a lot of drivers that were standard Microsoft drivers with drivers dated 15 March 2016.  Should I be concerned about this at all?  Should I revert them to OEM drivers?

Also, what about drivers that were not updated, or those available from here specific for x58 mobo components?  When I perform a clean install (as I am planning on doing here shortly) shout I just let Windows 10 install the drivers it wants, or should I go back and install drivers from here even though some of the dates on the drivers here are older than Windows 8?

Generally speaking, you should use the latest drivers with the OS for the motherboard. If everything is working as it should, I don't see why you'd be concerned. Pretty much the only drivers I worry about updating are add in hardware such as a GPU or sound card.

Native drivers don't load for the USB 3 (at all) nor for the Marvell SATA III connectors (Standard IDE - ****?), but the ones available from here are rather old.

Windows 10 will replace whatever drivers are newer provided the hardware drivers for everything you have is available. So long as your system is stable you are fine. However, check your device manager and make sure nothing appears out of place or has a yellow exclamation mark.

Windows Generic drivers for the SATA III controller are abysmal at best.

Most everything is fine on the system, but the driver in question is a generic M$ IDE driver still dated 2006 shows as an unknown driver, even though I am on a brand new install of Insider Preview build 14295.

I suppose I'll have to install the old 2011 drivers for it.

    Thanks.

Now I got a bigger problem.  I'm getting Code 10 (device cannot start) for the USB 3 ports.  Installing the NEC driver from here works sometimes as well.

*Sigh* - time to shop for a new mobo, I think.

You probably need to update the firmware.

Secondarily, have you tried updating all the core drivers?

And lastly, why not try another OS?  If it's DX12 that's making you hold on for dear life, you should know Vulkan is another option.

Please stop asking me about trying another OS.  I get that you don't like Windows 10,  great.  I am not bashing you on your choice of OS on the machine, and I'd appreciate it if you paid the same respect to me as well.

I choose to run Windows 10 because Win 8 sucks and I am an IT professional with a business of my own.  I've run XP for years and I've run Windows 7 for years, and solving problems on them is easy, but with so many of my customers on 8 or 10, I'm not going to fire up a VM ever single time they call.  It's easier to call the VM when customers who are still on 7 or older because those calls are less frequent.  On top of that, in case you didn't know, Insider Preview builds are not, generally, released for public consumption.  IOW, I'm beta testing it.

Your first link is broken, by the way.  I already have snappy, and This issue I have is a new issue, not been happening before.

I was using the insider builds myself but the problem for me is that every time I installed a new insider build it corrupted data on my m.2 SSD. When there is a permanent update (no beta or alpha update) I will make a backup and try again.

Now that is odd.  The current preview build now has ISOs available for clean installing, which suggests that it might become the de-facto final build sometime soon.  I clean installed on my desktop on the previous 14291 build using a utility to create ISOs from the .esd downloaded, but I did my laptop via the full Win 7 --> WinX --> Insider build update process.  I'm going to clean install it on the laptop and see if it makes a difference, as well as to not what drivers are still not installed.

A lot of older Microsoft drivers (from the Win 7 days, those with the October 2006 dates) have been replaced with drivers dated 18 March 2016, one of which is the USB 3 driver that keeps replacing my NEC driver from here.  I'm probably going to play around this weekend and use the ISO to clean install and see if that alleviates some of my current driver issues.  The previous IP build did not have these new drivers in it, and I suspect that the Update process (with the old drivers from here) caused some confusion on my system.

I just hate reinstalling everything, particularly my games.  Thank goodness for Origin and Steam....

Ahhh, fixed the USB 3 issue.  In troubleshooting my issues with HyperV, I turned off HPET.  Enabling it allowed the device to start in DM.  Simple.
