My girlfriend got her new laptop yesterday and is bringing it over for me to install everything on it tonight.

Specs: (of course)
16" HD Glossy Screen
Mobile i7 720 1.6Ghz
4GB DDR3 1333mhz
1024MB ATI Radeon HD5730
500GB 7200RPM HD
Windows 7 Ultimate

Now I can handle all the antivirus stuff, firewall, ccleaner, ms office, and of course her games... but I have no idea how to check if it came with the ATI drivers installed, and if they are already up to date or not.

So ATI boys, how do I check if her version of Catalyst is the newest?

Best thing to do would to simply download and install the latest drivers. No need to check anything.

Open the ATI control panel by right clicking anywhere on the desktop and in there under the "graphics" tab look under "information" and read what driver it's using. The latest official ones are the 10.2 set, but the better performing 10.3a sets are located here:

Wow... Asus configured it with version 8.6... Seems Asus is a few releases behind lol.

Edit, maybe not... thats the packing version. I don't see Catalyst Version anywhere.

This link shows Catalyst Version, her information doesn't show that.

ive got a ASUS laptop for work, it has the mobile gtx 280 in it i think!  not bad for a tech rig to program security systems

other than that im not over thrilled with it, doesn't seem to be as solid as my old dell latitude D505 and i need to put in more ram (1gb running vista business aint to good)

What's the Direct 3D driver version? TO be honest though just to be sure, uninstall the current ATI drivers and install the latest ones I posted. I can guarantee you they are not the ones I linked you to. Those are the newest and best performing ATI drivers to date.

Looks like you might need to go to ASUS website to download the drivers there. Typically Notebook drivers are specific to the install, they are not the same as the drivers we use in our desktop machines.
go to www.amd.com in the upper right corner of the page you'll find the driver download wizard, follow the directions they'll lead you to the latest download.
