Happy New Year all.  I tried to keep this to PM's first but evidently I need to have at least 10 posts and 5 days registered to have PM permissions.

I recent bought a z97 Classified on Craigslist which was still factory sealed.  I got it home, bought all the components needed for my new system (processor, RAM, GraphX card etc PSU....... all brand new) and put it together.  It ran great for a couple weeks.  And last night I wanted to rearrange my system fans and so I powered down, went about rearranging, and got everything the way I wanted it but couldn't get the system to boot.  It wont do anything at all..... well the power button on the mobo does illuminate when the PSU is plugged in but it wont turn on though.

this model had a release date around May 2, 2014.  (These warranty terms are valid for purchases ON or AFTER July 1st, 2011 for products within the regions of the Continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. For prior versions of the warranty terms please click here: )

Obviously my mobo was manufactured after that July 1st, 2011 date.  If there is a way to find the exact date, I'd be much obliged.

Since the mobo was released last year, I'm obviously inside the 3 year period and we know this 100% even without a receipt.  And I do not have a receipt.  And again, I'm the 2nd buyer.  And now I'm having an issue with the board.  There's always fine-print so I wanted to bounce this off you guys (really wanted to PM and official EVGA person).

Does it look like I have any warranty protection here?  The original Warranty as listed on the package is 3 years.  Where do I find my suffix on the board?   What do these mean ?  3 Year Suffixes: -A1, -A2, -A3, -A4, -AR, -AX, -CR, -CX, -DX, -FR, -FX, -SG, -SX, -KR, -K1, -K2, -K3, -KB, -KA, -KF, -KM

the P/N on my board does have a (-KR)  "suffix"  - safe to assume that's my suffix?

How could I troubleshoot this issue?  I

Go to the Guest RMA page and enter the serial number to find out how much warranty is left on your motherboard: https://www.evga.com/support/guestregister.asp

Wow thank very much for the reply.  I didn't expect much traffic considering it's a holiday.

Upon entering the number, it looks like I have 1040 remaining days

Shipped Date:   11/06/2015
The days left for warranty period : 1040 Days
Do you want to submit an RMA request?
Do you have any idea if I need proof of purchase?  I didn't purchase from an official EVGA vendor or whatever the official name of these retailers are.  I sent a message to the seller asking if he still has the receipt but I haven't heard back from him.  It is New Years after all.  He's probably busy.  But hopefully he'll find a minute to at least say 'no' if that's the case.

I do have all of the original packaging though.  I also have all the original stickers etc.  Obviously the enclosed accessory bags have been opened though.  By that I mean Sata cable packaging...IO Shield packaging etc.  I did not need to open any of the SLI packages though so they're still sealed in the hermetic bags

If you don't find anything obvious like a connector that you knocked loose when installing your fans then you are good to go for applying for an RMA replacement. Happy New Years to you.

I'll give it another good once over but I'm pretty sure something is wrong with the board.  I disconnected every single thing except the processor and heatsink and reinstalled the minimum required components to start her up but it was the same.  It did nothing.  No sound no beep no lighting changes.

I also hooked the PSU up to my other system and it's fine so it's not PSU issue.  That leaves the Motherboard or the Processor.  I have no way to troubleshoot the processor though since I don't have another 1150 mobo lying around.

I'll see if I can't see something causing a short somewhere, but I believe I've exhausted all methods available to me.

It's kind of sad to see you get off to such a rocky start in the New Year but at least you know that EVGA has you covered with a warranty. If you haven't dealt with them before, I think you'll find them to be very helpful and easy to communicate with. I have never had any problems with the EVGA customer support staff and I personally find them to be the best I have ever had to deal with for any reason.

Re: z97 Classified Warranty policy etc Sunday, January 03, 2016 6:57 AM (permalink)
Yep, I did try this.  I thought perhaps the case itself could have been shorting out a trace or...... any number of possibilities (I even took the cpu cooler mount off which 'could' have been shorting something out since it's got metal studs going right through the PCB.  So I did try it on the mobo box before I packed it up to ship.  But it just doesn't respond.  The board seems to be getting power since the integrated on/off switch is illuminated.  I did press the clear cmos button.  I even replaced the battery once.  I tried 3 different sticks of RAM.  I just don't understand how one minute it's working and 10 minutes later it isn't.  But when dealing with complex electronics, that just comes with the territory sometimes.  I know it's a quality product.  Just must have run into some bad luck.

I started the RMA process and received the go-ahead to ship it early this morning.  Considering I started the automated process on New Years Day things are moving reasonably quickly.  As most of you know or have read here, customer service is about as good as it gets with EVGA.  They stand behind their products.  I hope to have the same experience.  So, like Zuhl said, even though I ran into some bad luck with the board, at least I have solid reputable company to deal with.

Unfortunately, I have a x34 Predator monitor being delivered on Monday and I wont be able to enjoy it till I get a mobo reinstalled.  Hopefully things continue to move right along.  Thanks for the tips on troubleshooting and RMA.

I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I shipped the mobo today.  I didn't see anywhere to enter a tracking #.  Does EVGA not require any kind of tracking # upload?

Thanks all

No, shipping and insuring the package is your responsibility. EVGA will send you a tracking number when your replacement is shipped from them.

Cool, thanks Zuhl.  I got insurance too.

My new monitor came in today.  YAY ... except my old computer can't really take advantage of it's better features.  It's still a nice upgrade though nonetheless.  I can't wait to get everything put together.  I have it all now(except the mobo); ram,cpu,psu,ssds,hds,case,cooler,graphics,os..... sure all adds up when you choose 'better' stuff.  This is the first time I've chosen truly upper tier components across the board.(no pun intended)  Then again, what I consider 'upper tier' probably isn't quite to many of you guys in here.  Just need that backbone back.

thanks again for aiming me in the right direction.

I bought a cheap 35 dollar but never used H97M Pro4 ASRock 1150 board today locally so I could make sure my processor wasn't the culprit and it wasn't.  It's got to be the mobo.

It's my first experience with ASRock.  Their bios is interesting.  There are features I like -like being able to mouse over a pic of the mobo and identify what's where etc. And some I don't. (lacked some RAM funtionality)  But it is a pretty barebones board.  It lacked stuff the Classified has, but it also had stuff the Classy doesn't.   Not bad though overall ... for 35 bucks.

Having said that, I can't wait for the Classy to come Back in Black

$35 is a good price for a working motherboard. A lot of people like ASRock but the only product I owned by them was a Z77 Extreme4 and I hated it. It was too short to reach the standoffs and it was really flimsy. I was worried about it breaking just from trying to get the 24-pin connector seated. It is now in a PC I built for my sister with a i7-2600k.
