I finally got all the components for my new build last Wednesday, and so I put it together and for some reason 3 of my hard drives didn't work, so I took things apart, looked at the cables, all looked well, and I reassembled it, and then 6 of my hard drives weren't working. I took things apart again and swapped in one of the other cables that came with my PSU, and I still couldn't get 6 of my hard drives to work. I figured bad power supply, so I took the 6 non working hard drives out, 2x 3tb  drives, and 4x 5tb drives. one of my 3tb drives worked fine and my 2 480gb SSDs worked fine too.

Today I used an external adapter to see what was going on and it turns out all 6 of the hard drives are dead. They wont even spin up. So, I disassembled everything again, and being the type of guy I am I used a multimeter to check pin to pin connections on the cables that didn't seem to work so I could see if there was some reason behind the failures because you simply don't see that many hard drives fail like that. That was when I found a problem. Of the 4 cables marked as SATA one had different pin to pin continuity, meaning wires were crossed somehow from the factory. As a test to confirm that this cable damaged my hard drives I had an old pull SATA drive that would still spin up, but had some bad sectors and was on its way out. I could get a read on it using the other three cables, but when I hooked it to the cable that had different pin to pin connectors it then failed. I couldn't get it to be recognized any more and it would no longer spin up.

Now my question is, since I got a brand new PSU for this build, the EVGA Supernova 1300 80+ gold with its 10 year warranty, and it had a miswired cable straight from the factory, will EVGA replace those drives? There was no way for me to know there was an issue by looking since all of the cables are sleeved and look identical, even down to the pins and connectors to the PSU itself. These hard drives were all bought in the past month and a half with the exception of one of them, which was bought last year, adn they worked great in the previous build. The data I have on them is gone now, and that really irritates me, but I hope EVGA does the right thing and at least replaces the drives. I'll even send them the ones their cable fried.

Wow, my evga psu 1300 watts came in today and now I am weary to hook it up. I would flip out if something like this happens to me. Good idea to back up my system before I make the switch.

As much as reviewers tout the EVGA power supplies as being a very good PSU I have seen and heard way too many horror stories for me to even think about buying one with or without a 10 year warranty.

Yeah, for me it was the loss of data that really got to me in addition to the cost of those hard drives.

I don't know what their policy is concerning damage caused by a defective product. I don't know if it still holds true or not but my Corsair H80i was the only AIO that came with an explicit guarantee that Corsair would replace any items damaged from any leakage. It never leaked but the pump keeps burning out every three months, lol.

I would hope they will do what is right since there is no way that I could have known one of the cables that came with the unit was miswired and caused me to lose 6 hard drives. The right thing to do would be to replace them. I am sure asking for data recovery would be too much, but at least replacement drives.

@OP
I would think they would make things right and replace the drive. What you need to do is keep that wire so that way you can send to them. That way they can see first hand the issue.

Man, I had good luck with my Corsair H80i. I bought the H110i GT to cool this i7-4790k and it's not even 3 months and it's burned it up. This was on top of the fact that I was missing hardware and they took over a month to actually send it to me. I'll never buy Corsair again because I've seen a decline in their workmanship as of late. I did two builds for two other guys and one had the h105 and another had the h100 and within 6 months both of the pumps failed.

I'm an amateur photographer (though I have sold some of my work), so of course I take pics of everything. I have pics of the multimeter showing continuity across different pins between cables in 24mp resolution, and sharp and clear enough that you can zoom in a pixel peep on them. It is very clear what I took pictures of.

All kidding aside about EVGA destroying the evidence, you may have options open to you if EVGA doesn't respond to your liking even if they have included legaleze in fine print on their warranty policy. Someone complained about EVGA denying an RMA request because the CPU socket pins were bent swearing they were fine when he shipped it. Another member recommended taking pics next time and that is what I do whenever I RMA a motherboard just in case someone tries to pull a stunt like that with me. I always include a time stamped photo with the motherboard. The BBB can be quite influential in dealing with large corporations. I have had legitimate complaints against some big companies like Dell, Verizon and AT&T and have won and been awarded damages using the Better Business Bureau.

Thanks! I will definitely take pictures of the PSU itself and all the cables, pins, etc. in addition to the pics I already have before sending it in via the RMA since they had me enter my credit card in. All the date, time, etc is stores in the EXIF data. I hope I wouldn't have to make any complaints to the BBB, but I will if I have to.

Something like this happening really was a buzzkill for the excitement I had about building a new system.

So far here is the response I have received via a trouble ticket I had submitted. I hope Dave will be able to assist me better than the person on the trouble ticket. I have also saved everything from this topic as well:

Pending Question9/10/2015 9:40:59 AM
I have the pictures in this thread on your forums: that is an unacceptable answer. The hard drive manufacturers will not warranty items that were damaged by the product of another company. There was no way for me to know that I had a defective and incorrectly pinned cable by looking at it. 5 of the drives that were killed would be in warranty and one of them would be outside warranty, but as I said, they wouldn't warranty something that was not a defect in factory workmanship or materials. I am an engineer for a company, but I used to work and do customer support. I know that in certain cases where a defective component causes progressive damage to another component, even if that component is from another company we do cover it regardless of what is stated on a warranty statement. I fully expect your company to do the same. I am waiting on a reply from the person who is from your company on that thread either via the forum or via email. I expect to hear something different from him.

Question 9/8/2015 6:38:40 AM
I narrowed down what the issue is. I had 3 of my hard drives not working, so I disassembled the case and then found that all looked fine, then reassembled it again, and then 6 of my hard drives were not working, and the only ones working were the ones on the molex to SATA adapters plugged into the peripheral spots, so I checked the cable pinouts on the SATA power cables you guys supplied and found that one of them had different pin to pin continuity, in other words someone had mixed pins on it during initial assembly. To confirm this I had an old SATA hard drive that had some bad sectors, so I knew it was failing and I hooked it to three of the cables and it read, but when I hooked it to the one with the different pin to pin continuity it wouldn't spin up or read any more, and I couldn't get it to spin up any more when hooked to a good one. That bad cable cost me 26 terabytes worth of hard drives, 4x 5tb and 2x 3tb hard drives, plus the data that was on them. I had most of the really important data backed up, but I still lost terabytes worth. I also lost those drives, and all but one was less than 2 months old, and the older one was a little over a year old. I would at least like you to replace those drives since it was your component that was miswired and there was no way to tell it was bad without testing it with a multimeter. I can send you the drives that were killed.

Answer 9/8/2015 8:37:43 PM
Hello,

I'm sorry for all the trouble with your power supply. I see that you purchased this unit less than a month ago so with that said was it working without any issues from the beginning? Perhaps if you can provide some images of the pin lay out on both the cables and the connection used we can see exactly what is going on. Unfortunately we would not be able to fulfill a replacement for the hard drives you would have to consult with the manufacturer for a replacement since we can only provide warranty support for the power supply.

Regards,
EVGA

Question 9/3/2015 6:27:46 AM
Hi,My address is Scotty XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Thanks.

Answer 9/3/2015 6:47:26 AM
Hello,

I have submitted the RMA for you. Please allow 24 hours for the RMA to be reviewed and approved. Once approved, you will receive an email with all the instructions enclosed. If you have any further questions, feel free to contact us again anytime.

Regards,
EVGA

Question 9/3/2015 5:36:42 AM
I swapped the cables around like you said, and the hard drives are still dead. I sincerely hope this PSU did not kill 26 terabytes of hard drives with data on them, but that is what it looks like. I have 4x 5tb HDDs and 2x 3tb hard drives that were working fine in the system I pulled them out of since I was swapping them over to the new system, yet now they aren't working. I even used one of the spare cables I had from the box and still nothing.

Answer 9/3/2015 6:06:43 AM
Hi Scotty,

I doubt the drives are dead, it sounds like the SATA power ports are. If you'll confirm that your address info is correct, we'll arrange for a free Advanced RMA for your unit.

Please contact us with any further questions.

Regards,
EVGA Support

Question 9/2/2015 8:52:56 PM
Date Submitted : 9/2/2015 8:56:52 PM

Power supply gives no voltage on SATA connectors. I can only get voltage to some hard drives using peripheral connectors and molex to SATA adapters. The system I just built today with this power supply has a total of 10 hard drives and a bluray drive, yet only the PCIE SSD and the drives plugged through the peripheral connectors will show up since the SATA connectors are dead. Please advise me on my next steps with this brand new PSU.

Hello, I have reviewed the pics as has Jacob, and I am having this reviewed by the engineers.  Now for the PSU itself, PSU or cables, we can definitely  RMA, that is not a problem, and I can test it out here prior to shipment, that is NOT an issue at all.

Alright.  When you send the other back, can you please include the cable you tested as faulty please.  Also, can you write on the label or the shipping box ATTN: Dave B as well please, that way it will get scanned in and brought directly to me.
THANKS!

Good, ok, I am definitely going to be involved with this investigation and testing on this unit.  I have used that model of PSU for quite a while with a bunch of drives plugged in and no issues, so this is especially concerning.  I am really sorry this happened, but we will get this figured out.

EVGA doing nothing about the HDD it's power supply ruined? Are you sure you want to send the evidence back to evga, it could come in handy for small claims court.

I bet if this was a Corsair PSU, they would probably do something about the HDD's.

Hopefully this means I am getting somewhere. The PSU was already shipped and the new one registered to me. Depending on how this goes I will either send people to EVGA for components (I am walking a few people through builds right now) or will... well, let's hope for the best for me.
