I bought a Titan X SC off Ebay, and confirmed with the seller it's the 2992.  However, from the image on EVGA's website, the board doesn't look the same.  Also, the waterblock doesn't fit, as there's a capacitor (or what looks to be) blocking the waterblock from sitting properly.  Are the waterblocks for Titan X's known to not fit the SC's, or do I have a different card?  Picture attached of the board open without the cooler.

Put the air cooler back on and use gpuz to verify the part number. There should be no changes to any Titan X, since custom pcb's are not authorized. Always always always function check and verify all part numbers and clocks before installing the Waterblock. (not saying you didn't, but some people rush and don't verify.)

There is also a part number with the serial number sticker. Verify those according to what you should have.

Lastly, verify your Waterblock is a Titan X SC block, not a Titan SC. THE TITAN black SC has nearly an identical pcb to the Titan sc (reference image:)

Sounds like the most logical explanation of what is going on here.

I'm double checking with Koolance about the VID-NXTTNX water block. Will put the air cooler back on and check gpuz. The memory layout on the board doesn't look like any of the Titan X pictures I've seen.

What is the full part number on the serial number sticker?

Erin has verified that it is indeed a GTX 980 FTW so time to contact the seller, ebay, and/or PayPal.

It would not necessarily show up truthfully in GPU-Z.  GPU-Z can help lie.  The card can be hacked to make it show up as a different name in software. Sometimes it is as simple as modifying the BIOS.  Sometimes it requires more modification. But, if the cards are similar enough architecturally, it can be done and can be rather hard to detect using software. For example, see also: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/hacking-nvidia-cards-into-their-professional-counterparts/ . Also, refer to cheap fake GTX 680s linked to somewhere on this forum and on other forums: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/GTX-680-2G-2048MB-384bit-DDR3-PCI-E-NVIDIA-Geforce-Desktop-PC-Game-Video-Graphic-Card/1506578340.html .

Contact the ebay seller. But be warned that the seller may be very hostile towards you. Take note that the ebay seller either purposely tried to defraud you or just cluelessly resold something they purchased used. In the former case, they may be very nasty towards you. In the latter case, you should be careful to approach the issue with much tact as to not make things worse. If the ebay seller will not cooperate, leverage the buyer protections provided by whichever payment service you used (bank, credit card, epayment, whatever) to get your money back.

No, That is Definitely Not the Best News and Sorry about you getting the Wrong Product on Ebay, But I have also had similar "Product Not as Described" issues with "Certain Questionable" Sellers that have been dealt with and solved through EBay's Resolution Center in a Timely manner.

I'm Just Glad I happen to recognize what the Graphics Card you showed in your Pic Actually was!

As for bios hacking and hard modding a card to be different, the core specifically says GM204 OR GM200 directly on it, which can't be changed as far as I know, and how would a bios tell gpuz there is an extra 8gb or vram on board?

Thanks Scarlet, The OP's pic just happened to remind me of the GTX 980's I had a while back and as kram36 and you mentioned, I'm very curious about seeing what that "Titan X SC" actually looked like before the Air Cooler was removed.

The screen on my phone made the picture too small to see anything, lol.  Opened the PC, and it was a substantial difference.

A modification of the card wouldn't change the letters physically written on the top of the GPU die.  And it wouldn't make the card suddenly show up with 12 GB instead of 4 GB.  It also wouldn't change the number of reported ROPs or Shaders or Pixel Fillrate or Texture Fillrate, or a bunch of other things... But, it can make the card's name change from "GTX 980" to "GTX TITAN X" in software and drivers and that is usually as far as most casual observers look.  If the casual observer sees "GTX TITAN X", even if the casual observer does happen to notice one or more of the other inconcistencies, they are likely to believe that it is a GTX TITAN X and may think the other inconsistencies are incorrect readings in GPU-Z.

Take the fake GTX 680 for example in the second link I pasted above. If you view that link, you will see a GPU-Z screenshot which will show you that the card has to be fake. But there were many people who were tricked (at least one forum post somewhere here and other forum posts elsewhere with complaints) even though they had all the evidence in front of them before the purchase.

Has anyone even considered to advise the poor man to remove the TIM and actually check the GPU die itself to see what GM model is written on it ? i am sure that you can't fake that.
it can't be a titan x if the GPU chip itself says GM20X ...or even mount back the air cooler and test it ?
What ever method you use you should be able to indentify the card then raise apocalypse and hell together on the "seller" .
Ebay has great customer service , they'll deal with the idiot fast and you'll get your money back.

Sorry, I sent the card back to the seller before I could take a picture of the outside, but the cooler itself had "Titan" written on it. Looked exactly like what EVGA has on its website. The PCB looked completely different, as it looked like it was missing RAM.

Apparently the guy I bought the card from, originally bought it off Amazon warehouse as a used card. I feel someone bought the card new, and then swapped coolers and possibly did a mod/hack on the BIOS to report a different name....then returned it to Amazon, where Amazon then resold as a used item.

I'm giving the seller benefit of the doubt he got duped as well. He opened up a ticket with Amazon to investigate. He believes they are just sending him a replacement once he sends the card back, at which point on to me.

I Also would hope that you will quickly receive the actual Item you paid for, and If there is a God, The Investigation by Amazon that the Seller has requested should reveal Who originally returned that Card to them as a "Fake" Titan X SC and hopefully lead to prosecuting that said person for Criminal Fraud.

...or the seller is yanking your chain to draw out the return/dispute process beyond the EBAY 30 day policy , so he can get away 'scott free' .

Be wary of waiting too long on the Ebay sellers' story that Amazon is still investigating the matter....

http://pages.ebay.com/ebay-money-back-guarantee/questions.html

 ..for instance ....

You can use Money Back Guarantee up to 30 days after you received your item (or when you should have received it). After 30 days, file for PayPal Purchase Protection in your PayPal account. PayPal offers a 180 day window for coverage of items that are not as described or not received.

I agree, eBay gives way too much time on the sellers side. I always use PayPal and I generally file the dispute through PayPal as they will lock the money until the dispute is settled. I have yet not have PayPal side with me. eBay gave me a huge run around because I refused a delivery (which the seller ok'ed the return on) and the business had moved to a different address, but UPS guaranteed the package was going back to their new address, so eBay refused to give me the refund because I didn't spend my money and send it back to the company's new address, before the package was even delivered to the seller they refused the refund. So I filed a dispute with PayPal and they had none of that eBay bull and once the package got delivered back to the company's new address as UPS said it would, PayPal gave me my money back.

If it wasn't for PayPal the seller would have received a $400 item back to them and got to keep my money.

Yes, I Agree There IS a distinct possibility that the Seller is Lying!

If that was the worst case senario, There are some people out there I KNOW that might be "just a little" Crazier than me, and If indeed They were to encounter a Seller that was just "Playing Games" with them, as long as They had the Sellers Mailing Address that showed on the shipping label with the Item They had Bought, Then "Possibly" They might tend to think about taking a short Trip to that said location and Unfortunately,......... There most likely would be No Safe Place to Hide...........
