I'm running an ancient 1080 Ti on a ultra-wide 1440p monitor. I'm really curious how much longer I can hold out before gaming at decent fps and above-average quality get's difficult to maintain. I would like to upgrade to the 3080 Ti but I refuse to pay the scalpers so I might be gaming on this old 1080 for a while longer. Just curious if anyone else is in the same boat?

Same boat as you running a 65" 4k does fine. I'm really looking at that 3080ti but I know I can't afford it.

Running a 1080Ti on a 144Mhz Gsynch monitor. It could be better, but it also could be a LOT worse lol

Honestly, I'd stick with it for at least another year, you'll start seeing slightly more availability by then(Hopefully) with the 3000 series cards, and so snagging one won't be as difficult, it'll still be hard, just not that hard. A 1080 Ti isn't all that bad in comparison to paying an obscene amount of money for an RX 550 used right now.

My 1080 Ti is still just fine for 4k gaming as long as I don’t turn on ray tracing, but I only have one game that supports that anyway

Can you give examples what is showing it's age? I wonder if it is VRAM related or GPU core related or even PCB components related.

DLSS is probably going to be a gamechanger or the AMD equivalent. I would stick with the 1080ti until mining is over.

I believe he means euphemistically, that his hardware is getting dated and lacks the latest hardware accelerated features of the newer generations. Others could make the same point with an aging quad core. He's more or less telling us what his current bottleneck is.

for older cards, id recommend to just upgrade and overclock it, it is cheaper in the long run considering how expensive the 30 series gpu's are, you will have a better time just getting the performance now and getting more later

I think a 1080ti is going to be a great card for a good time to come. Nobody can find a 3080 so it’s not like games are going to require it and really the 1080ti does hold its own against the 2080. Until people can find a 3080 easily it’s not like games can go beyond that level that the 1080ti brings.

Still using 1080 Ti SC2 and it is honestly still a great card. I typically play at 1440p/144Hz and get at least 70-80fps in even the more demanding games at High/Ultra settings. The other day, I was playing Red Dead Online at 2160p with med/high settings and still getting 40-50fps in Saint Denis.

If you keep playing the same games you do now potentially for as long as your card lives. If you like new graphically intensive games though a few more years.

The 1080ti is a warrior. The only reason I'm looking at the 3000 series is to get the most out of VR. Now on the quest 2 the ability to play steam games at 120hz the 1080ti is not cutting it but anything else (other than cyberpunk) it's still battling on.

Lifespan? Until it dies. Like others here, still running mine with a Hybrid cooler... stays below 55C even on MSFS 2020 with low speed fans on the rad. I take care of my stuff. I'm using a Dell D620 circa 2005 running Windows 10 32bit. I use it to stream my media through a USB DAC. All the main players still have 32bit versions.

If you are worrying about the card failing there are steps you can take to extend the lifespan. From a software perspective, purposely underclocking the chip can help (at the expense of some performance). From a hardware side, you should perform cleaning maintenance at minimum and in more extreme cases replace the thermals. That last step might be a last resort (since it probably voids the warranty) but after 3-5 years the warranty is expired, and it is probably the best move.

I love my 1080 Ti SC2 hybrid. It's hands down the best hardware I've ever owned. But my hobby is game dev, and with emerging technologies like RTX ray-tracing and Unreal Engine 5's new lighting system, I feel obliged to upgrade. Still debating though ...

I also have that same laptop that I still use for almost the exact same purpose. At get-togethers I have it run my music streaming service and guests can add songs to the queue. I still use the two that I got some time ago for everything. They've even come in handy for some compute workloads as well with accelerating some quantum mechanical DFT packages. I don't think I'm ready to replace them with anything new yet since they'll even play cyberpunk at 1080p without any trouble and I only have 1080p monitors. I've only had to do general maintenance on them like repast them and clean out and refill the hybrid AIO on one of the cards since its cold plate got gummed up with corrosion somehow. I like to pull them from the system every thee months or so to blow out the dust. I've always stretched my flagship card lifetimes out and have gotten away with it ever since my GTX 295 which served up until I replaced it with a GTX 780 Ti. Remarkably, my old GTX 780 Ti has proven useful still although it got me to get on the waitlist for a new RTX card. That 780 Ti has the blower style cooler on it so it essentially thermal throttles a few minutes into games but better coolers are all over the used market for next to nothing. I may have to just upgrade the cooling on it until the GPU prices and supply issues are resolved.
