Hi All,

So i was recently getting terrible coil whine coming from my GPU so i contacted EVGA and got my EVGA 980TI RMA'd, whilst it was away i was using an old gtx 660 and noticed i still had intense coil whine, so concluded it was my corsair psu, so i purchased a EVGA SUPERNOVA 1000W G2 psu....but i still had coil whine buzzing sound in my headphones in game (could only head when in game volume was switched off) so i assumed well it must be the gtx 660 as surely a brand new G2 PSU less than 4 weeks old couldn't be the issue, so my 980ti was returned to me last night and when i fitted the  card and played a game to check for the sound there it was again...is it possible i have been unlucky and replaced a psu that had coil whine with another psu that also has coild whine or could there be other factors ? i have now replaced the PSU and EVGA replaced my 980ti with a brand new card so id like to think its something else and not a evga issue, i never noticed this problems prior to using evga and ive always been led to believe evga is the superior brand of computer components, just wondering if anyone could shed some light ?

Many factors can come into play when diagnosing coil whine. There have been more and more complaints about coil whine lately though I have never encountered it myself. Coil whine coming from your headphones could be from an external source of something called spurious radiation caused by another component. Are you using a dedicated audio board that might not be shielded properly? My Bose Companion 3 PC speakers have a volume control that sits on my desktop and whenever my iPhone is connected to the USB port after syncing with iTunes and sitting next to the volume control I get some buzzing and static in my speakers or headphones. Moving the iPhone farther way corrects the issue.

    Hi, Thanks for the reply.

The audio is from a Creative titanium x hd PCI sound card, never had this issue until i switched from my corsair psu and msi gpu, don't get me wrong i don't regret the switch i know evga is superior in most fields and in terms of performance im incredibly happy with my gpu, but this sound is incredibly annoying and never had to deal with it before, the sound is only present when a game or bench mark is running, general desktop use or video / web browsing does not produce the sound.

Coil whine is generally only present when the culprit is under load and can be very annoying. Did you change the location of any of your power cables to where they come anywhere near your sound card? Most coil whine is audible when close to the device causing it but rarely if ever through speakers or headphones.

I'll look around and see if I can find anything listed about similar problems with a Creative sound card. If I find anything about drivers causing it or other owners with the same problems I'll post it here for you.

Ok so i moved my computer and checked cable routes, no difference i did however switch audio to on board (motherboard) from the pci sound card and the sound was significantly reduced, still present but very quiet, though i did have even on desktop a small amount of noise and even a beeping almost like a dialing sound, once i switched back to the PCI card that sound was gone on the desktop but back to normal in game.

    Here's a post with a similar condition: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2652563/gpu-interferce-sound-card-causing-buzzing-sound.html

If it's the graphics card bleeding EMI into the sound card then moving the sound card farther away, if possible, might help. If you have a different video board you could try and the interference is gone without the current video board installed then I would say that it is definitely causing the problem.

As stated, moving the sound card further from the GPU is advised, if possible. Additionally, if you have front audio panel wires plugged into the sound card or motherboard, unplug the front panel audio wires from the sound card to see if that reduces the noise. If unplugging the front audio panel wiring reduces the noise, it means that your front panel audio wiring needs better shielding, a better ground, and/or needs to be moved further away from the graphics card or power wires.

Uninstall that sound card, coil whine go away ?
Chuck that sound card in the trash, you don`t need it.
    And why didn`t you go with a 1000 P2 or 1200 P2 ?

Cost - The amount of extra money to go from gold to plat seems unnecessary.

I remember others complaining about that same sound card when I was first looking into buying one for myself. My onboard sound is fine for me and I doubt I would notice the difference. The biggest complaint was having to relocate it to a different slot to solve the buzzing and it didn't sit well with a lot of owners who wanted it in the slot that they wanted it in.
