I'm just curious what settings people use on the z97 to achieve say 4.7ghz at 1.3v. My 4690k hits 4.5ghz at 1.3v and any higher clock speed I bet I'd have to hit 1.4v

My 4790k on MSI z97 G7 runs 4.8 at 1.300V VCORE 1.90V VCCIN bumping the VCCIN made it stable otherwise I would have gone back to 4.7 @ 1.25 VCORE There are plenty who go over 1.3 VCORE but that my self imposed limit. GL

I've tried 1.90vccin with no results. I know the 4590k can hit 4.8 I most cases easier than the 4790k. I wonder if I'm actually limited by the board rather than my cpu but I know not everybody gets the silicone lottery. ASUS makes a nice z97 gamer board, thinking about buying one as their bios looks way nicer than MSI's

It depends on the processor a little more in your case. Not all are going to OC the same. My i7 4790K can hit 4.9GHz before voltage needs to be increased, but I've had 2 others that required a little voltage push at 4.7GHz, so it's basically luck the of the draw unless you go on eBay looking for a solid batch known well for overclocking. But I also have a MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX A/C which has a lot more potential with 20 power phases to the CPU compared to your Gaming 5 board which only has 8.

A new board won't change the character of the CPU if you have to increase voltage to do 4.7 the likely hood of going much beyond that is limited at best. However RainStryke is right about a better board getting you that extra 100 to 200 MHz when you hitting the silicon wall but the real purpose for such a hefty power section is LN2 overclocking where it shines best. IMHO simply overkill for under 5.0

I feel like at the time of me buying my MSI gaming 5 board, it was the best at what was being offered. A lot of the higher end z97 boards have kind of dissapeared because skylake was just coming out. It is a nice motherboard, but when it comes to boards im a DIE hard ASUS fan. Even a 4790k is 500 CAD atm plus tax.

I tried out a few Asus Z97 boards. Overclocking with the newer AI Suite was very buggy for me, I did not like it at all. I ended up returning my last Asus board to get my MSI Z87 board, the driver support is quite a bit better and I got a lot more features for my money. Also couldn't resist the Z87 MPOWER MAX A/C for $40.

Yeah, it was. Microcenter always gives a bundle deal with their processors. Funny story... I couldn't make up my mind on the build I wanted to go with, either keep my i7 3770K and Z77 board or move over to the Z87 and i7 4790K. When I made the switch I was getting this weird hanging load when I would start up the computer. The only thing I changed was the motherboard and processor... so I thought it was the motherboard. I ended up returning my Z87 MPOWER MAX and replaced it with a Asus Z97 board, then switched out the power supplies when that didn't fix it... But I did find an awesome deal on my Seasonic X-1250 for $80 pretty much brand new in box. Found out one of my hard drives was actually causing the problem... So I returned the Z97 and i7 4790K to just keep my i7 3770K/Z77 set-up... Recieved one of my video cards back from a RMA and accidentally broke off a connection on my motherboard that made the on-board audio work... I found my Z87 MPOWER MAX board on the open box shelf and got a sweet deal for it with the processor. It was cheaper for me to buy a new motherboard than to actually get a decent sound card.
