So, I'm getting ready to go on my very first hunt this weekend.  I will be hunting feral hogs.  I'm taking my AR-15 with 64 grain .223 "Hog Special" ammo, using my Vortex Strikefire Red Dot sight, and I just picked up the iProtec RM400LSG rail mounted 400 lumen flashlight with green laser. I don't plan to use the laser at this time though.  I'm also bringing my dad's 30-06.

So, how many of you are into hunting?  Can you guys give me any advise?  I'm going with a group of 5 guys.  We're planning on baiting an area tomorrow and then return Sunday early morning.

Take any clothes that you are wearing and hang them on a clothes line outside until you are ready to start your hunt. Don't use any kind of deodorant or cologne 24 hours beforehand. Avoid strong smelling soap .

Be careful. Hogs are known for attacking hunters.

We're planning on setting up in the bed of a buddies pickup so we're not on the ground.  Plus we're not planning on getting that close to them.  No knife hunting and no dogs.

Make sure your guns sighted in b\4 hand I know may sound simple but a couple a rounds should tell you.I'd use the O6 on the big ones they are tough critters, might seem overkill but it's better than having one of those squealing blankety blanks running off. Rule one a guns ALWAYS loaded so watch were you point the muzzle end. Be safe have fun and save the celebration for after the hunt when all the guns are put away.      Better make sure this is legal in your state. In Ohio they will confiscate your vehicle and guns for hunting in a vehicle. It doesn't matter if the vehicle is stationary or moving.

Funny that I had no problem pulling pull the trigger in SWA.

Perhaps because Deer don't shoot back?

Well, I guess we'll have to alter our plan a little.

Dad back in the 60s used to shoot deer right the window of the truck. Lolz this was in sparsely populated Wy. I remember one time he told me theres a deer slide that window over " Ol IH Scout 4wd" and he slid the 06 right in from of me I plugged my ears but the chamber was 10 inches from my face. Talk about concussion Wow ah fond memories.

Are the hogs considered vermin? No limits :) Might be special rules in place. They shoot em out of helicopters in Texas I say heck YA! Now that would be fun :)

Yeah, they are considered nuisance animals and there are no limits or seasons, plus we are going to be on private property at the request of the land owner.  Not to mention that we are in fact in Texas.

Would love to go on a hog hunt. Currently getting the final items for my Sig716 in 7.62x51/308 (little much for hogs probably). Need a high powered scope, then later possibly next year getting a red dot and replacing the flash hider with a muzzle break. Would love to get a suppressor, but the cost is just to much and not very practical for my current rifle. If I get a 300 Blackout, would end up getting one. May just buy the upper receiver for one. Rambling now, so I'll shut up lol.
I hunt whitetail, bow and rifle. Hunted 9 days straight 3 days ago, but nothing came in worth shooting.

Hogs on your first hunt, very brave!
Stay in pairs, watch ur six, hogs might look ugly and slow, so dont let ur guard down at all.

Id suggest packing a pump shotgun and a large pistol on ur person when ur in the woods, hogs dont play fair and are very smart, smaeter than some of my own family members, lol....

Triple check ur local codes too, you dont want to pzzz off ur first game warden......

Well, first hunt over and done. Sadly, no hogs. I did however manage to catch about 6 hornet stings. Must have disturbed a ground nest. They followed me for nearly half a mile.

Don't feel too bad not every hunt is successful. I have hunted for around 40 years and only make a kill about 1/3 of my hunts on average. Sometimes I go all season without a deer. I only hunt on my own property though and never for sport. I always eat what I kill.
