I'm not a fan of HP. Several years ago I snagged a laptop from a black friday promo for my father, it was an at-the-time old stock Sandy Bridge generation chip that had been sitting around for a year in its box. Apparently that was enough to cause the thermal paste to harden to concrete and separate from the CPU in the process, so when it was powered up it was throttling heavily and the fans were maxing out. No temp or throttling warnings naturally (yet it was full of HP bloatware instead) but it dawned on me to check temps after a few minutes as I was setting it up for him. 
 
This of course necessitated I gut the thing to replace the goop and verify it wasn't some other defect, and I got my first lesson in how brutal HP's are to service. It is most definitely built with aesthetics first and serviceability last and requires some plastic tools if you don't want to damage the housing. From what I gathered it's fairly typical for HP builds. I am more familiar with Dell, their laptops are generally easy to service and my ancient Dell 2005 DTR laptop is still chugging slowly along so they can last. I can't speak regarding Lenovo as I've heard both good and bad stories on their laptops, I have not personally worked or used one after they bought the division from IBM so I can't say. But I would recommend against HP for whatever that's worth. 

I don't think there's much of a difference in budget system quality with these manufacturers. Hardware/software support and reliability are about the same. Most of the problems are with the users/owners. The Lenovo looks like a much newer system (and is not Refurbished), cost $50 less, and has an Intel i3-4030U so I would pick it based on that alone.

I would have gone for the HP for the GPU. But the Lenovo is going to have some awesome battery life.
