To me, the whole 980ti vs 1080 is like the 4790k vs 6700k. One is newer, more energy efficient, and newest architecture.
But, is it worth upgrading if you already own the last gen? Already own the 980ti? In my opinion, no. Most agree the minimal increase is not worth the increased cost.
I have both 4790k and 6700k. I also have a 980, 980ti, evga hybrid Titan X and the 1080. I have been benchmarking different combinations of them. And right now the HOF is standing with the 1080. I would not sell one of my "older" cards just to buy a the 1080 and that is being said with the fortune of having been able to test them all.
Buy another 980 ti, a month ago the were the goal of every gamer. Don't let the 1080 distract you from that fact. Imo.

Here's the top scoring 1080 SLI vs the top scoring 980Ti SLI (both with a 5820K processor) - http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/8680042/fs/6479109

It's pretty much a wash with the 980 Ti SLI pair a little ahead. Driver maturity for the 1080 will close the gap, and probably exceed the 980 Ti SLI.

Two 980 Tis vs one 1080? As long as the games that you play support SLI, the 980 Tis will trounce the single 1080. Here, about 75% better with SLI 980 Tis vs the top scoring 1080 (both with a 5820K processor) - http://www.3dmark.com/compare/fs/6479109/fs/8666448

Exactly what my benchmarks showed me also. The hype can only last so long. Then facts kick in, reality strikes. Many have literally dumped their 980 Ti's for ridiculous low prices. Sad. The 1080 was made for VR. That's its power point.

The 1080 was made for VR but what VR program would the 980ti struggle with in the least?

    CM - Master Case Pro 5 | Asus Z170-Deluxe | Nepton 240M | i7-6700K @ 4.6GHz | 32GB G.Skill TridentZ 3200MHz | SLI GTX Titan X's | Samsung 850 Pro 2TB SDD | Windows 10 Pro 64-bit | Philips 43" 4K Monitor | EVGA Super Nova 1200watt PSU | Sound Blaster X7 LE
