I have about 4 days to wait for my new parts - I am wondering how much the processor and ram upgrade will affect my gaming performance.  It seems like I wasn't getting the most out of my SLI setup.

I am moving up from a i7 - 950 after 3 years.  I upgraded some components along the way and will be using some of the upgraded components in the new build.

eVGA X58 - 141-GT-E770-A1
i7 - 950 @ 4Ghz
12 GB DDR3
(2) GTX 770 in SLI
(2) 256GB Samsung 830 SSD - Raid 0

New build:
I am stoked to put this thing together!!

X99 FTW
5930K - cooled with Corsair H110
32 GB G.Skill Ripjaw DDR4 2400
(2) GTX 770 in SLI
(2) 256GB Samsung 830 SSD - Raid 0
1300 Watt Supernova
Corsair 750D

What do you guys think?

I'm using the i7 950 myself and I will upgrade my PC to 5930k soon. I know someone that can get me the cpu for half the price (yes 50% discount). That is the only reason why I will upgrade my system lol.
But I'm confused whether I should go for evga FTW, MSI Gaming 9, or Rampage V Extreme. For the look, the MSI mobo looks the best. It's darker and has more cover on the mobo.
For RAM, I'm gonna go with G-Skill 16 GB red ones .. with at least 2600 MHZ.
GPU, I will wait for a single GTX 880 later this month (possibly will be called GTX 980).
Can't wait for my next build.

although the new rig is really a beast don't expect too much increase regarding gaming performance.
not because of the parts but just because of the games themselves, their design and architecture.
so from cpu and ram point of view anything beyond 4 core and 8GB ram doesn't make much sense.

It really depends on what game you are testing on. Something like CoD isn't going to use the full potential of a game as it is pointed to the lowest denominator. I am building my computer for Star Citizen which uses all free cores available and has already tested OC 4790k's and 4960X's to their potential, and that is in arena commander. whether that is because of its not been fine tuned or because it is that intense is yet to be seen. I do expect SC to be taxing on a computer so I'm building at highest denominator.

I would agree if I was coming from a more current i7 processor.  There is a significant performance improvement from my current i7 950 to the processer (i5-4690K) referenced in the article you posted.

    Quote from the article:
"Our tests demonstrate fairly little difference between a $240 LGA 1150 Core i5-4690K and a $1000 LGA 2011 Core i7-4960X, even when three-way graphics card configurations are involved. It turns out that memory bandwidth and PCIe throughput don't hold back the game performance of existing Sandy Bridge-, Ivy Bridge-, and Haswell-based machines.  Where we do see the potential for Ivy Bridge-E to drive additional performance is in processor-bound games like World of Warcraft or the multiplayer component of Battlefield 4."

I do gravitate to processor bound games with Battlefield 4 being one of them.  Others that come to mind are the Arma series and DayZ (I know DayZ is not optimized and everyone is getting poor framerates but, in the end, it is still a processor bound game).
