Hey gang, So the time is getting close now - have all the components and will be beginning my new X79 Dark build on the 16th, a week from Monday. On this EUFI thing, is there anything I need to know when setting it up for that? I will be using Samsung 840 Pro SSD's, and installing Windows 8.1 on it. I know I first will need to set the drives to AHCI. Anything else I should know prior to getting it set up initially? Thanks for any tips,

Yes, make sure you disable CSM. If you're not able to boot with that off then enable it and try running each device as UEFI and switch one device at a time to legacy boot. In case there is a device that isn't UEFI compatible.

If you're SLIing EVGA 780s, put the one with the newer BIOS in the top slot. I know, it's really specific advice, but it was a gotcha on my system with CSM off.

Thanks for the info guys! Not running sli. Ok so I need to set the devices as show above for UEFI before doing anything else? Just for clarification, what is CSM?

I agree with the advice given here and must tell everyone that with a fresh install Windows should give you an option to format the drive correctly. Since you are using SSDs there should not be an issue but if using RAID make sure you set that up first.

Yes will be doing a fresh install of Windows 8.1 on a Samsung 840 Pro 256 gb SSD. No raid, no sli. Thanks for all the help guys, trying to make sure I am as prepared as I can be so hopefully get it right the first time. Thanks for the link doorules, have it bookmarked and will be reading up on it between now and the 16th. Still curious though, what exactly is CSM? Thanks,

CSM is Compatibility Support Module, provides support for traditional legacy bios, as opposed to UEFI. Just a bios setting but it can trip up install.

doorules You will also need to format your OS drive in GPT form and not the typical MBR. Anything and everything can be found here in terms of ssd's and setups bud.

This is not true. Windows 8.1 will create a UEFI MBR and format the drive accordingly. you just need to boot off of your win8.1 drive and go through the regular partition setup.

Yes that is correct and then it should work. If you have any problems just let us know.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate this - a week from tomorrow you may very well be hearing from me :) Hopefully it all goes smoothly - have been building these things for many, many years - however I find the older I get, the tougher it gets .

Thanks for the heads up bud. Is this done under CSM legacy settings? Only uefi installs I have done have been under the GPT form. Not sure why you would want to go uefi and not gpt also.

If you turn off CSM and go to install a fresh OS (windows 8 or 8.1) (windows 7 doesn't support UEFI) the MB is now setup in full UEFI mode and win8.1 will create a UEFI MBR and partition the Drive accordingly. UEFI isn't just the UI shell it also allows the hardware to boot faster and the initialization process of devices isn't constricted to the OS and the old 16bit BIOS. GPT is just a seperate shell (BIOS) there only benefit your from that is a custom UI. Not sure if your Shell/GPT support UEFI hardware settings.

If you're using a brand new drive, and follow the instructions above, GPT will be created automatically. If it's not a new drive, but you delete all of the partitions in Windows setup, you'll be taken care of automatically as well. Just make sure CSM is off before you run Windows setup. It's just a type of partition map is all.

Thanks guys, it will be a brand new SSD I will be installing Windows 8.1 64 bit on. So basically when I first post, go in and disable CSM, then boot from the Windows 8.1 dvd and install. ( unless I have to mess with memory timings first to get it going I guess). Thanks,

I recommend installing before doing any memory setting changes. You don't want to find out you're unstable halfway through an OS install.
