It's only odd because the popular news are making an issue of it. During peak in solar cycle this is a standard thing. You would have known no difference in your life unless they mentioned it. :)

Frankly this scares me... soon... very soon I may end up standing on my head and not remembering how I got there.  At my age it is likely I'll be committed.  Fear the science!

Most communications and power companies do what they can to prepare for it. In some major cases solar flares will knock out power and communications. That is the most you may ever see happen do to the storms when the sun gets ready to flip. And the occasional aurora borealis seen as far as the equator depending on the strength of the flare that hits earth. If you want to learn more go here. http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/ They monitor the sun 24/7.

I've lived through 2 solar cycles then, according to their statements. Nothing to worry about, except it's been hot as HELL lately.

I find it more interesting how our magnetic pole wanders around on Earth.

Yeah that part I never quite fully understood. The geographic poles never seems to be in the same spot as the magnetic ones. It kinda dances around it. This kinda gives you an idea...

It's simply due to the distribution of magma. It moves around like a really hot ball of snot, we're just floating on it.

Even the geographic poles move quite a bit depending on the wobble of the Earth.

This is why we have two bearings/headings, true & magnetic.  Most of the time, people use magnetic to quickly get a heading.  But over long distances, you can end up a couple nautical miles off target from where you're trying to head to.
