Hi Guys,

I have an issue that hopefully somebody can help me with... I have an EVGA GTX 780 ACX Superclocked that does not want to boost over the base clock in almost any games / apps. other than the following:

BF3 (Boosts to 1189 but crashes after a few mins)
Heaven 3&4 (Boosts to 1189, works like a charm)
EVGA OC Scanner (Boosts to 1189, works like a charm)

The card is OC'd with Precision X to 1189MMHZ which is where I believe it maxes out as heaven will freeze and a hard restart is needed.

In Precision my settings are:

Overvolt +38
Power Target 106
Core +75
Memory +200
Auto Fan Control

I have tried uninstalling everything in Safe Mode with Driver Sweeper (incl. Drivers, Precision, Riva etc...) yet nothing works and the strange thing is that it does not even boost with stock config without the OC.

I am running the 326.19 beta drivers atm...

I have checked the nvidia control panel settings and windows power management and both are set to performance...

I am stumped as I am not sure at which point this issue started, and I want to see if anybody can help me out...

Cheers!
Kyriakos

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply..! At the moment I do not have Precision X installed so the card is running stock and still not boosting to 1097 like it should, or at least how it used to... Is there anything I can try seeing as I am having the issue without an OC..? I tried a game that used to work @ full boost and is working @ 967 or even 810...

    Thanks...

    Hi,

So I tried everything you said but im still having issues...

I just did a clean install of the 320.49 WHQL drivers without Precision X and here are the results with vsync off in nv control panel:

    Crysis 3 everything maxed @ 1080p 1097mhz
Tomb Raider everything maxed @1080p 1097mhz
    WRC3 everything maxed @1080p 1097mhz
    AC3 everything maxed @ 1080p 1097mhz

    Heres the interesting part:

Skyrim everything maxed at absolute ultra @ 1080p 967mhz wtaf...

Skyrim should be boosting the card easily... Whats goin on..?

    Thanks..!

    Just a quick update...

Have just ran Heaven 3, Heaven 4 (pls see attached image) & 3D Mark 11 with my current OC settings and I get no crashes, yet I get a complete system freeze in BF3 after 2 mins of gameplay. I also got a random freeze in WRC3 (my freezes need a restart).

Skyrim is still not boosting the card at all.

I tried disabling vSync but some games are unplayable... and even if I set my nvidia preference to performance games with vSync enabled are stuck at 967mhz... Is there no way to actually force full boost clock speed even at lower vSync limited fps..?

    Thanks!

I think the final piece to my puzzle is:

    1. How to force full boost clock with vsync enabled for some games, or even always in any game...

    2. Why does only bf3 crash, is this a system instability or a BF3 issue..?

    Thanks..!

Hello. My first time in this forum. Sorry for my english.  Try overclock with k-boost. Clock fixed to est. max (1097Mhz in stock clok and voltage). Gpu clock in skyrim must be 1097. I try this and work.

When you run games like skyrim the clock won't dynamically clock to the highest it can go because it doesn't need to. For example when I play disordered maxed I get 120FPS with my 780 and when I exit it doesn't always reach it's boost clock of 993. It's fine, it's because the game isn't THAT demanding. And BF3 is bad for overclocking, leave it at it's base clock with that, someone (who knows computers) said it was something to do with the programming. Do you have any OSD in Precision/AB? I had crashes in all games when I got my 780 and set my CPU back at stock and turned off OSD in PX. I only have fraps running and went up in very slow increments. Now my stable boost clock with voltage at 1.2V and temp target at 90 is 1189Mhz (was +160Mhz offset). I'm sure these cards thottle at 80 degrees regardless of temp targets anyway. Oh yeah reinstall PX and select NO when it asks if you want to save it. When you reinstall UNCHECK Riva. ONLY install PX

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the input... I can confirm that bf3 is fine without an OC yet my old Direct CU ii GTX 670 with a ridiculous OC was fine in the same game...

This is driving me nuts... I am able to complete both Heaven 3&4 fine without any probs. & with quite good results, 3dmark also is fine, running ocscanner for around 30 mins is showing im stable yet Valley either crashes half way through or will complete and crash 2-3 secs after the results are didplayed...

I will try again without riva and post my results... Im quite annoyed that dirt3 is also crashing randomly...

Do you think I might have a power issue..? I reverted my cpu to stock clocks without any difference...

As suggested I removed PX & Riva and reinstalled only PX... Just ran a Valley benchmark at stock and it reports the clock at 1306mhz... Thats wrong as all other software report 1097 boost... Anyway I raised the core in PX to +70 and mem to +200 including a +38 OverVolt which crashed Valley whilst reporting 1376mhz... Heaven & 3DMark complete without problems... Why on earth am I getting these freezes that require constant restarting.... Very frustrating for a mild OC compared to others...

What is your power slider on? Do you have OSD in PX? Do everything at stock and game for at least 30 minutes and report back, if no crashes then JUST increase core by 25Mhz then game again for at least 30 mind for stability. Don't overclock core and memory just yet, find your stable core. It took me over 3 days to finally figure out a stable OC of +160 core and +75 memory. How did you arrive at these clocks? it takes a lot of testing to find stability. Download GPU Z and check the ASIC quality of your card, it could be low meaning not a lot of room for an OC. Mine is only 73.4%.

Hi, I dont have osd and my power slider is at 104%... I arrived at these clocks by increasing the offset by 5mhz and benching in heaven 4 untill I got it stable without any crash in either heaven, 3dmark and ocscanner... Only bf3 and valley seem to crash... My ASIC quality is 69.9%...

So... BF3 just crashed with no overvolt and no mem oc, just +50 core and power slider at 104... It was ok at +25... This is ridiculous... Theres reference cards that perform better than my SC ACX...

Valley completed @ +50, hard crashed @ +75... The reason I am persistent with BF3 is that my first 780 acx sc was oc'd to over 1200mhz and ran BF3 perfectly... I stupidly rma'd it after speaking with evga as ocscanner had a bug and was reporting artefacts...

Looking over your posts it appears that your current card is not a overclocker and/or is quite sensitive to voltage issues.

You also have a CPU bottleneck
    -and-
Your PSU is a older design with some loading issues http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/OCZ/ZS_750W/9.html

Given the current state of Nvidia driversets and the programs used to overclock with them, I believe the best course of action would be to leave the card at stock for now and see if better drivers and newer versions of Precision will change the behavior.

Question: when you sent in the RMA, what did you use for graphics on the system or was it down the whole time?

Thanks for the input maniacvvv, much appreciated!

When I sent in the first card for rma the system was down for the whole time, then I received a refurb. back as a replacement which I was not pleased about as my card was only a few days old when rma'd, so this is now my third 780 SC ACX... I was without a computer for over 3 weeks all in all... In hindsight I should not have rushed to RMA the first ACX (I was tricked by OCSCANNER) as it now looks like a great card, or maybe even the refurb. would have been a better option!

I may purchase a new PSU very soon... The frustrating thing is that I can run heaven, 3dmark & ocscanner all day wihtout any problems... I thought that Valley was a milder benchmark software than heaven, or at least that Heaven was the more trustworthy... I am hitting some great scores without any issues...

I may RMA this card eventually as it's a shame for a 700 euro card to be worse off than a cheaper reference 780...

Is there anything else I can try in the meantime..??

I also have two cards like this -- they don't really like overclocking at all.  Only recently I realized if I turn the voltage up to 1.2 the better of the two gets to 1100+ and the bottom is at 1097, but never gets to 1.2v and therefore doesn't go to 1100Mhz+.  I realize now that it's okay though.  The extra MHz doesn't equal much more FPS in most games.
EDIT:  Funny.  I just went back to look at the voltage andddddddd stupid me.  I thought Precision X would mirror the settings like it does for just about everything else.  It doesn't.  So I turned it up and now both cards hit 1124MHz.  Derp me.

Oh and the other posts are right, the card will up or downclock itself depending on load.  So don't worry too much about how high the clocks are all the time.  If your FPS is a steady 60 or more, it's fine.

The 1300mhz that valley is reporting is still quite puzzling. Is this just a display error, or is it actually pushing the card that high which is resulting in the crash... I just raised the fan manually to 85% and I managed a Valley bench @ +50 but the card never goes above 60-63 anyway so this does not make sense...

I believe Unigine Heaven and Valley demo/benchmarks report bogus clock speeds.

I must admit that without rivatuner I have not seen any benefit, and I can no longer monitor my gpu.... when you say that your voltage is at 1.2 what do you mean..? I only know the increments in the PX overvolt panel... Am I possibly going too far @ +38... I need to determine if I am crashing the driver or its an actual hardware crash...

Adding the 38mV to the stock voltage = 1.2005V, well 1.2V,   which is, according to the review on Anandtech, the approved maximum.

    So you're okay with that.

    This is using Precision X.

So, I don't understand your issue. Why overclock for BF3? the game already runs at 100+ FPS with the GTX 780 SC ACX. Do you really need extra frames???? I limited to 75 FPS and, not only does it plays great, I safe a ton of  GPU usage, temperature and energy. I don't understand these pointless overclocks. I can see, maybe, how you would wanted in Crysis 3, but BF3???

    Hi,

I may not have mentioned this but im an animator, and im only just stress testing the card in games & bench software... I will be using it for real-time gpu rendering where I need all the power I can get from my hardware... The quicker it renders the more productive, and also more money I can generate... The more fps i get in my viewport the easier it is for me to animate...

I understand that the fps generated in games is more than enough but if you have a ferarri and for whatever reason it doesnt go over 120kph, will you say that thats more than enough seeing as its over the speed limit anyway... Thats how I see this... :-)
