Hi guys,

I built a new system about a month ago and for the most part have been very pleased. I am seeing stuttering in a couple games that I can not figure out how to fix. The games in question that I have noticed the issue on are Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag and Diablo 3 Reaper of Souls. The games will alternate between smooth frames and noticeable stuttering while playing. I have tried playing with vertical sync settings both in game and with the nvidia control panel, but I have not had any success with fixing this issue. I am on the latest Nvidia drivers (according to control panel) and I have Geforce Experience loaded, but I never use it. I will list my system hardware below. Let me know if there is any more information I can provide. Thanks in advance for your assistance with this.

CPU: i7 4770k (currently at stock clock)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus Hero VI (on the latest BIOS version)
RAM: 2x 8gig Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866
Drives: 500gig Samsung 840 evo SSD (Rapid Mode enabled) 2x WD Black 1TB HDDs
GPUs: 2x EVGA GTX 780 Ti Superclocked in SLI mode
Monitor: Single monitor 60hz 1050 resolution (Waiting for the Asus 1440p with G Sync to come out)

Internet: Verizon Fios (50Mbs up and down)

For Diablo 3, by setting a maximum foreground and background FPS and lowering shadows a notch, you can usually get rid of most of the stuttering. At least that worked for my stuttering issue. For AC4, try setting godrays to low, this reportedly helps a lot of people having stuttering with it.

Does this mean you have tried with vsync turned off? Stuttering can be pretty common with vsync, and some games are just really bad with it (look up Bioshock stuttering for instance and you'll see a ton of people with the same problem, and potential solutions)

Geforce experience is normally spot on with their "optimized" settings, which also allow you to tweak with a nice slider control.  AC4 BF is a pretty intensive game. One GTX 780ti will have PhysX set to normal, god rays to high etc......no stuttering at all. Diablo III is a weird game.........some of the odd stuttering can be associated with the games programming.

Thanks for the quick reply. I will try these settings when I get home and see how it goes.

Saying that, it does seem kind of odd that I would have to turn down settings in games already with over $1400 in GPUs

I have tried both with vsync turned on and off. In D3 I get screen tearing with V sync disabled (from the game menu) and the nvidia control panel setting seems to have no effect. AC4 behaves the same way with either setting.

If you want to get the best of all worlds(and you should since you prolly spent north of $1400 for a pair of 780 ti's), then you should be looking at a Gsync enabled monitor. Eliminates vsync(no lag) and tearing and stuttering 100%.

Ok I tried Jaeson's settings suggestions as well as trying to use Geforce Experience optimal settings (in that order) and am having the same results in both games. I am about to try and reload the drivers unless anyone else has any other ideas. I can post DxDiag or something if that would be helpful. Thanks again

EDIT: Also, what about the beta drivers. I see there is an updated SLI profile for Diablo 3. Has anyone had good luck with these drivers? I may try them out too.

Gsync is great, it's just not ready yet. Really wish they would come out with something that didn't have to rely on TN panel tech

Just because its "TN" doesn't mean its poor. I run the Asus 1ms 144hz TN panel with the Gsync module, and its the FIRST LCD panel that I have EVER SEEN that can give true CRT like performance. Its colors are not quite as accurate as some of the upper tier IPS offerings, but when carefully calibrated it comes close enough where you cant tell by eye that the colors may be slightly off. It calibrates very well. Add to the fact that its gamma curve, ANSI contrast and black levels and saturation are superb and better than most monitors period regardless of tech and you have a ridiculous bargain at $399 with the gysnc module(That's what I paid anyway). Even off angle viewing on this specific panel is surprisingly good. Normally TN panels have poor off axis viewing and dim out terribly, but this panel doesn't.

All of my friends that have seen my setup cannot believe its a "TN" panel. But it is.

Yeah....Gsync is "ready" it already works flawless, and I have the first generation "DIY" kit.

Never said it was poor, just not for me. Glad to hear it's giving CRT like performance, that is the whole point after all. Yeah I've been drooling over the motion blur reducing tech since lightboost (which does the same thing in a slightly different way.) Sorry though, ready for the market, and DYI don't belong in the same sentence. I'm eager, but waiting until its viable.

Absolutely its ready for the market, and in fact its going to be out in 5-6 monitors within the next few months and is already in production with a number of companies including Asus, BenQ and Viewsonic, both 1080p and 1440p to start. The "DIY" part for the Asus monitor though that was released a few months back is a 15 minute plug n play job. If you can upgrade your video card, or retim your cpu, or swap out a hard drive, then you can install the gsync kit..........or you can just wait for it already integrated into the new monitors coming to market in the next few weeks. But Gsync is here, and its a 100% polished product. Nvidia is not "AMD" .  ;)

Completely agree that Nvidia is ready to release Gsync, it's the monitor manufactures that are behind. I mean, there are literally zero monitors you can buy right now that have Gsync. The only option available are for extremely early adopters like yourself who are willing to crack open their monitors and DIY. I think it's fair to say that until you can actually buy a monitor that has Gsync in it, it's not ready lol. Like I said, I've been following Gsync since it was announced and am really excited about it. I've been preaching it to people and think it will be a huge success once released. I wouldn't even consider it though until the PG2789Q comes out. I mean, assuming you had the VG24QE -- and depending on when you bought it -- you just voided an amazing 3 year warranty. Man, just writing those words makes me sad. Mad props to you for pushing the tech, but there is a really small portion of people out there willing to do that, instead of waiting a few months for the manufactures monitors to comes out.

Well I stumbled on to something tonight that may shed some light on the problem. If I leave everything in Black Flag maxed, including god rays, yet turn off physx completely the game smooths out. I also noticed that the GPU seems to have higher usage % via OSD with Physx off then with it on. I am not sure if this could point to a configuration issue on my end or other issue, but I thought I would post and update and see if anyone had an idea. Could the CPU be attempting to handle the physx by itself for some reason? Not sure what else would be the reason for this "fix". After I discovered this I attempted to force Physx onto GPU2 instead of auto, but it did not seem to help. Game stutters unless I turn off Physx.
