Hello! I haven’t posted in a while since I like to lurk/read more than write.
Here is the tragic story of today (in story form! There is a Tl;dr at the bottom for those less inclined for a yarn)
I have had my computer for a little over 2 years, it was/is the first one I ever built. It was working fine upto today, when my CPU cooler, a CoolIT SYSTEMS ECO-R120 Advanced Liquid Cooling (ALC) leaked over several parts.

Today when I tried to boot my computer I was affronted with a bad smell and its refusal to POST. At first I thought the smell might just be some fan wire or jacketing being melted by a fan (I have a ATX case and it doesn’t really fit everything in very well (putting on the side cover is a real effort!))
Anyhow, I couldn’t see any free wire, and then I noticed that one of the connectors to the CPU block was shiny as if it were wet. Smelling it quickly assured me that this was a leak. Then I noticed that on my EVGA 480’s shroud (I think that’s what it is called :P) there was a little wet patch, and below that I saw that my PSU and was wet. Then I noticed that the GPU was soaked, with a barcode sticker looking a lot like wet newspaper, and that it had also gone over the PCB of my sound card. Due to the black PCB it was hard to see where it had gone. I have read some suggestions through a slow google search (this laptop is hopeless!) and the far worse tale of Little Sister. However I am hesitant in doing anything like washing it in distilled/pure water or isopropanol yet. Especially upon my Sound-card (Asus Xonar Essence STX) as a small amount of rust or liquid, I’m guessing, would defeats its purpose of high fidelity (I love my audio).
I contacted Newegg through their live customer support thing, but they told me that I couldn’t RMA since its past 30 days or something, and the CoolIt thing was out of warranty (I bought it on 7/7/10, it has a two year warranty if I registered, which I think I did). So I have sent an email to the CoolIt people and I’m awaiting a response.

However one of my concerns is that I live in Australia, I purchased the parts from Newegg since they were cheaper than any Australia stores at the time, and my father was going to be in America on a business trip and could pick them up safely, and without a huge shipping fee. To return the parts to America for inspection would be quite costly. I have however taken some photos, but it is very difficult to see where it has actually gone, as the PCB is black, the only indication is the lack of dust.
There is some Australian law that the ACCC supervises, however since this law was passed after I purchased the parts and I bought the parts from an American store, the customer rights that it protects, may have no power, another Australian might be able to help me understand that.
Ideally I would be sent a cheque or voucher to replace the motherboard, graphics card, cooler, PSU, and sound-card, and if the processor or RAM  are affected, something to cover them as well (I am highly doubtful that my HDDs are affected, however when I picked it up to place on some newspaper so it doesn’t leak on the carpet, it dribbled over me L). Unfortunately apart from my crappy school laptop, which BSOD just after I had finished writing out this post the first time, I have no computer to check what works or not.
I suppose in someways however it’s a blessing in disguise, as I have my final exams throughout the next two weeks :P though I was looking forward to reinstalling BF3 and my other games L.
Anyhow, I’ve finally got that out (for the second time) and congratulations on reading through all of that! (I’m a bit verbose I realise)

I would be grateful for any advice anyone can give me, and I suppose I will have to start researching new parts, or at least a new cooler, it will be difficult to find a small enough one!

My Build was/is: i7 930, EVGA FTW 3, EVGA 480, 6GB G.Skill Pi series (I really needed more), 2x60gb OCZ Vertex Turbo RAID 0 OS, 1tb WD blue, and a KINGWIN 1000W modular PSU + the CoolIT ECO ALC cooler, and my favourite part: Asus Xonar Essence STX with AKG K702 headphones.
(sorry for the long post!
TL;DR: My CPU cooler leaked over several parts, please give suggestions as to how I could fix it, and how I might get replacement/compensation or what I should get as a replacement.

I feel bad for you man. There might not be much you can do. The only real help you can get is from the company you bought the cooler from. But since its out of warranty you might not get anywhere with them. I know companys like corsair have replaced parts that have been destroyed when there coolers leak but im assuming they were all under warranty when it happened.

That is terrible! Only other thing you could do is take your parts to a PC shop to test them. I hope the coolit people take care of you, but I would understand if they didn't because your out of warranty.

My friend's h70 leaked a while ago and I'm starting to freak about my own h50. I'm strongly leaning towards getting a noctua nh-d14 because a possible leak in my h50 is scaring me. Does anyone know if the company will cover the parts even after the warranty has expired? I doubt it.

Im guessing not if the warranty expires. It just the risk you take when you mix water with electronics. The odds of your cooler leaking are pretty low. Ive only see a few people who have had it happen to them, and considering how many they sell its a small chance it will happen. But it is something to think about when your warranty expires.

I accidentally necro'd the other thread. DX

I personally would never watercool something with extremely expensive eletronic parts, especially when I can Oil cool and never have to worry about a tiny leak destroying an entire system, and get some pretty good cooling performance from it.
you may not be able to sell your parts down the road, and have a bit of maint difficulty added, but IMO oil cooling is the way to go.

Just because there was water on the parts, doesn't mean there dead. Distilled water is not very conductive at all, so unless your PSU blew up multiple components, I'd be willing to bet that more parts survived than you think.

As far as who's responsible for replacing the parts, that's on you IMO. Unless CoolIt advertised the unit as leak proof, everyone should know that there is a risk of something like this happening.

I refuse to deal with water cooling, it's a question of not if it'll eventually leak, but when. Save yourself the heartache and shift back to high permanence air cooling.

I had a Danger Den loop leak in 2006 but everything was under warranty. I immediately swapped back to air cooling and haven't looked back since.

water-cooling is awesome, but it needs to be maintained and inspected regularly.
    that's why i got a d14.
it will never leak and the only maintenance is blowing dust off of it once a year.
cools like a champ too, running a i7 930 @ 4.3 ghz and it stays below 70c at load.

I have had coolit products before, and had one leak all over my PC.  Coolit replaced the cooler, but it was under warranty.  As for the rest of my PC, I took it apart and sopped up the bulk of the liquid then took a blow dryer and dried the rest of it for a while.  Then I let it sit for about 3 days just to be sure that it was dry.  I was fortunate that nothing died.  This happened about 3 years ago and the PC is still running today.  The liquid that coolit uses is specifically engineered not to be conductive.  The only thing that changes this is the dust that the liquid picks up from your hardware after it leaks, so if your PC was pretty clean there shouldn't be much to worry about, although my PC was off when this all happened so I was able to completely dry it prior to applying any power.

I'll wait for a a response from CoolIt, however it is annoying how it says maintenance free, although I am under no illusion that there is a risk with any liquid cooling thing, I was expecting that it might not leak, but rather the fan or the pump might die.

When I tried booting it, and realised that there was I am assuming something has blown or was shorting. I am hoping it is just the CPU fan header not detecting another power going through.
Futhermore, it would seem that quite a few of these coolers have been failing at about the 2 year mark (reading review on Newegg and elsewhere).
Worryingly also is that the Corsair Hseries are based upon and I think also made, by CoolIt, however it would appear that Corsair has good customer support and have helped to replace any soaked parts.
I'm annoyed that they must have realised their product likes to break and would at least issue a warning of some sort, so I could replace it with a newer or different one.

i take the all in one Coolers as literal as possible ,maintenance free for 2 years ,then buy a new one.Better safe then sorry :/ I would almost bet anything they will not cover your loss as its out of warranty ,they have no legal reason to .But i hope for you they do

I suppose you're right, but I thought I fitted in that category two days ago. I think that BioHazard's idea of replacing them every 2 years as you would with a water filter or similar would be good

Well the H100 is my 1st AIO and I'll probably replace it soon once Corsair changes to the newer style with rubber hoses or when the Thermaltake Extreme comes down in price.

So I'm a bit ignorant in the life expectancy of these AIOs.

Im going to find the box it came in and see if it has a MTBF marking, lots of other components do, and it would make more sense that something as vital as a cooler should have the MTBF marking.

Found the box, the pump is rated at with a MTTF of 50000 hours, which is about 5.7 years,
The CoolIT 2 year warranty says:
A prefilled, factory sealed, liquid loop of carefully chosen components offers years of worry-free cooling.

    also:

THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER DAMAGE RESULTING FROM ACCIDENT, MISUSE OR ABUSE, LACK OF REASONABLE CARE, SHIPPING DAMAGE, MODIFICATIONS, THE AFFIXING OF ANY ATTACHMENT NOT PROVIDED WITH THE PRODUCT, LOSS OF PARTS, OR OPERATING COMPONENTS AT SPEEDS OR FUNCTIONS OTHER THAN THOSE SPECIFIED...

(sorry about the caps but that's how it is written) also

IN NO EVENT SHALL COOLIT OR ITS EMPLYEES, AGENTS SUPPLIERS, MANUFACTURES, OR CONTRACTORS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES OF ANY KIND OR CHARACTER, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY COMPENSATORY, INCIDENTAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, PUNITIVE, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, LOSS OF USE, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF INCOME OR PROFIT, LOSS OF OR DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY, CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES, OR OTHER LOSSES OF ANY KIND OR CHARACTER, AND WHETHER OR NOT THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH LOSS OR DAMAGE HAS BEEN NOTIFIED TO COOLIT

It's pretty standard I think, just in case I do something incredibly stupid like try mixing explosives using the fan and then sue them for providing faulty stuff when it goes bang in my face. However the one thing that they do warrant is defects in materials or workmanship for two years, which means I suppose I'm out of luck. :( I suppose I have to wait until tomorrow for a reply since it is Sunday night over in Canada, whereas its Monday lunch here :P

CoolIT has made contact with me today asking for the standard stuff, (proof of purchase), which I have replied to them with. Not surprisingly they suggested a similar idea of washing it with distilled water, which I am going to do as soon as I can find some to buy. I'll keep posting updates in case anyone is interested.

I have sent a support request to Asus for information about what I should do about my sound card, as I thought it was the only piece under warranty. However I just checked and the PSU, RAM, evga motherboard and graphics card are all under warranty still, it would appear only the cooler isn't! So if I follow their advise, I probably void the warranty on all the parts that I do wash. Is it possible to claim warranty over that parts that have been damaged by the leak? It's not really fair to the companies who made those parts however, as it's not their faulty parts or bad workmanship that caused the damage, I assume, unless someone is willing to correct me, that accordingly the warranty of the other parts don't cover me. Any suggestions?

Damage done by the cooler would be refused by any vendor. Its not a defect or fault of the part that another damaged it .The only hope of warranty was if the coolit did the damage under warranty and if they covered such damage. As it stands none of the parts effected by water damage would be covered under any manufacturer warranty .Sorry but thats the harsh truth of it
