I know this section is pretty dry but I will ask just in case. I bought a cool security system with a dvr. I know very little about networking but I managed to get through the guide with port forwarding and everything and I can now enter the IP address of the dvr on my network at home and it pulls up and works great. They make an app (KMEye) for the iphone but I don't own a smart phone. I want to access the dvr from far away. I assume I am missing something because when I enter the IP address, I just get a 504 gateway error when I am on my laptop with an aircard. I think it can do this but I must be messing something up. Here is the model http://www.cibsecurity.com/6_6.html I have sent an email to the CS department but haven't heard back from them yet. Is there anything else I can try aside from trying to get an Iphone emulator on my laptop? The dvrs IP address is 192.168.1.10 but I have a feeling that is only going to work when I am in my network? I don't know what the heck I am doing! I hope I don't have to do anything else with the ports and crap with the router because that is WAYYYYY over my head!

Hey I have a home surveillance system too that comes with a dvr that I have connected to my network. My dvr had a web interface that can be viewed on any browser (you just have to install an h264 codec that comes with it) But the web stream can also be viewed on android devices or apple ios devices using an app that the company has made. On the local network I didn't have to forward any ports. But if you want to view your dvr's web interface over a WAN you need to forward the web interface port and the dvr server port. There are a few cctv software that can be used to view dvr streams. One I have is called CMS it came with my dvr, but it looks like software that could be used with any dvr system.

I'd suggest doing the following. - find your dvr's ip address, web interface port (http port, ex. 80) and the dvr server port (ex. 5555) - forward the two ports in your router settings - go to this website canyouseeme.org and enter the port numbers to check if they are visible outside your lan this will let you know if the port forward was successful. - now try to connect to your dvr over it's web interface or through an app.

Thanks! I will try that as soon as I get home. I am a noob with all this port forwarding stuff.

don't worry that is what canyouseeme.org is for. I've been using it for years (since 2004) when I was running a webserver for the first time at home. On my dvr I had forwarded the web port and didn't forward the server port and it looked like everything was working but I would get a connection failure (bad gateway or similar like you are getting)

if you can control anything with the DVR such as deleting footage i would strongly suggest against opening the port IMO. i would install openVPN on a PC that stays on 24/7 or see if your router itself supports any VPN methods.

some pc running 24/7 in the same network is enough to control anything that you can access to from that pc. all you need is a simple app like TeamViewer (free for personal use) and configure it with username and password so it starts with PC and allows remote logon front any device (even smartphone) with same username and password. that's what I do.

Yeah i wouldnt forward ports inside your home network either. Thats just asking for trouble. Openvpn is a good solution if you can set it up.

Holy crap, I am so lost. This all sounds confusing. I do have a media system that is running most of the time. My poor router has every hole plugged!

Having ports open into your home network is generally a bad idea because if an attacker is able to compromise that port they can scan about and do tons of damage, and considering its your security cam DVR that your wanting access to leaving the admin stuff open to the wide internet is a bad idea. That is why i suggested something like openVPN. yes you still have to open a port but security holes in it will more than likely be patched pretty quickly after being found thus making that connection secure. From that you then log into your DVR like you were at home.

So I should use an app like team viewer or logmein and then connect to the dvr like I do when it is in network? Maybe I will give that a shot. I tried using a few of those programs before and I always have connection issues. Maybe it's cause my internet is so slow. Now I need to find one that is not blocked by admin on my work laptop....

hello again agent8. don't mind the other posts about ports. your dvr's web interface is password protected plus I believe you can create and manage online users (you can set up a user that only has viewing capabilities if you feel concerned about security). Additionally you can also restrict ip addresses letting only specific ip's to connect to the dvr (but that's jsut being paranoid). Seriously you don't need to worry about open ports there is enough security already in place on your dvr. Just be sure you change your dvr's default password. If you need any help PM me.

unijabnx2000 Yeah man you'll be fine.... go for it. /sarcasm why the sarcasm? Why are you guys so paranoid about opening port 80 for a device running linux with htaccess authentication and ip filtering. sure you could use openVPN or do a more thorough network configuration on your router to only allow internet access to your dvr at a specific time of day. But why bring a sledgehammer to hammer a nail? people are missing the point of the thread. The OP is looking for a way to make his dvr accessible for viewing on another device in the most simplest way possible. But at this point in time I bet hes already overwhelmed by all the irrelevant suggestions.

I am very confused. LOL The dvr place sent me a thing on how to port forward using a standard router and it gave me a link to how to do it on other routers but they don't look the same at all. My router is an Asus ( http://www.asus.com/Netwo...TN10_B1_RTN10Plus_B1/) and it has something else than "port forwarding" they call it "Virtual Server" The place to enter the range and everything is different and since I don't know what anything means, I am going to have to watch some youtube videos and google some more to figure out what I did or what I need to do. Thanks guys

hi agent8. Did you identify which ports need to be forwarded? It's usually one or two ports that you need to forward. A lot of routers have different names for port forwarding. You want to go to the virtual server section and enter the port number and the IP you want the forward to apply to (the ip will be your dvr's ip address).

It works great and I even figured out how to have the dvr email me when there is motion detected except I am getting a lot of emails with pictures like this one... LOL. Pretty cool. I just ordered 2 more cameras and a mic!

lol yes I only set up email notification when there is video loss or hard drive warnings. You could always mask out certain areas where you want motion detection to happen and setting the motion detect sensitivity. There is a setting for drawing a region of interest on each video feed. Wait until it starts raining lol, your motion detection will go off so easily, I was lucky to have a setting in my dvr for ignoring continuous motion (like rain) you may want to see if there is an option like that in your settings.

I have it so it doesn't detect where I have a flopping tv cable. I got a cool picture a while ago with shadows of about a dozen bird shadows flying overhead. I have a 1-4 sensitivity adjustment on it but I'd rather have false alarms than miss something. Plus it's kinda cool watching bunny eyes and stuff at night.

cool, continous motion detect will help get rid of shadows triggering false alarms if you have it.
