I do LOT of encoding and it's one of the main reasons I went from my X58 FTW3 to the X79 Platform. I had the chance to get decent money for my previous rig from my brother as he ALWAYS likes running about 1 gen behind and he KNOWS he could not get what I have at the price I am going to sell it to him PLUS he gets me to install and transfer everything along with total setup...
Money, for me, is the value of bang for the buck, and the best memory I can get. This ALWAYS rule my choices on computer gear. For those reasons I chose the SLI over the FTW.
1. I am probable NEVER going to run more than 2 video
cards and IF I do the SLI will run it.
2. 6+2 Phase PWM vs 12+2 Phase PWM will not make much
of a difference with me as I OC, but I am NOT bleeding
edge though 6+2 Phase PWM will let you OC JUST as
well, JUST not quite as efficient.
3. The FTW has a 90 degree 24v Power connector, 100%
POS caps vs. those around the CPU where it really
counts, the rest are solid caps which are MORE that
good enough for me! I will never see a difference... The
same thing goes with the amount of Gold in the socket.
Better yes, see a difference debatable... Onboard USB 3.0
headers vs None on the SLI and some other minor things.
4. One thing that MAY not be so minor is the SLI is an ATX
board vs an E-ATX board for the FTW. IF you have the
wrong case then the E-Atx board WILL not fit.
5. The Classy is even bigger but that is so you can add 4
video cards SHOULD you chose that...
6. MY biggest reason are performance vs bang for the Buck...
I chose the I7 3820 which I got for $229 at Microcenter.
CHOSE at the RIGHT time and it costs you $199.00. The
other CPUs are better, but what 10%-15% better at
ALMOST 50% more money??? I mean do NOT get me
wrong, IF money as not an issue I would have spent it...
For ME the 3820 ROCKS at a great price... WITH a
Rebate from EVGA at Newegg you are spending $229 for
a GREAT MB. I took the $100 I saved and bought Corsair
Dominator GT memory as it is said to be the best here is.
Keep in mind these are
MY reasons for chosing what I did. I hope they help you. Others here WILL chime in but I tried to be a complete as possible with my personal thought process. There is NO wrong choice,
ONLY what's best for you and only you can chose that.
