I've been using two gtx 275's in sli on a single 1080p monitor for the longest time and i am looking to upgrade to surround for the first time. There are a few options as far as gpus go, but i'm trying not to break the bank while doing so:
(including tax)
used 590 evga classified for $500
new 670sli $1000+
new 580sli $768
used asus Matrix GTX580 Platinum sli $750
used 3gb 580sli - $800
new 680 4 gb $670

As for price i'd like to keep it under $600 if possible. Any sujestions.

So I take it you'll be getting or already have 2 more 1920x1080 monitors and will be gaming at 5760x1080? In this case you're going to want cards with a lot of VRAM, 2Gb probably being the bare minimum so that will eliminate half of your above options right off the bat. Going with SLI GTX 680/670 4Gb or SLI GTX 580 3Gb are going to be your best bets.

    i was afraid of that, i already have 3 monitors (1080p) :P
How do you think a single gtx 680 4gb would fair, untill i can get a second one next year...?

You can do it with that one card but you'll likely have to turn down the quality settings and AA at that resolution, not necessarily for the sake of VRAM but thats a lot of work for a single card. SLI GTX 580 3Gb would be the route I would take if you want instant gratification as 3Gb of VRAM is still plenty for surround gaming and its cheaper... but if you want the latest and greatest I guess start saving up for that second 680.
